I never beat the second level of Superman 64, due to it being difficult and a downright horrible game but this is apparently the ending:

For me, hardest game I probably ever played
Forced me to leave my system on for close to two full days cuz it didn't have a save feature
Don't even remember the ending.. and I can honestly say even tho it was hard.. It was fun

Nah my friend it was more than just that. Trust.
Imagine a game series in which every juncture of your actions led to a negative or positive action for the whole overall story. Now imagine you doing everything right positive in all 3 games only to have the whole trilogy destroyed in the last 10 mins by giving you only 3 endings in which the main character dies in all 3 of them and that screen in the last thing you see!
Rage wasn't difficult but had a pathetic fukking ending.

over the Mass Effect 3 ending. They forget about these 2 classic games having the lowest payoffs ever
The way we looked at video games were different back then compared to now. Nowadays, the industry has fully evolved and games are mimicking films now giving you layered characters and in depth stories along with the gameplay, so expectations have changed. Back then, you sit down, play, beat it and it didn't matter how it ended. The fact that you completed it was satisfying enough.

True that, but Konami had no excuse with this one. Other games of that era had legit endings and frames, with actual explanations of what you accomplished, and with such a diffult pair of games (even difficult for its time!) where mastery was the only way to actuatly beat levels, Konami kinda phoned it in with this one
