The way we looked at video games were different back then compared to now. Nowadays, the industry has fully evolved and games are mimicking films now giving you layered characters and in depth stories along with the gameplay, so expectations have changed. Back then, you sit down, play, beat it and it didn't matter how it ended. The fact that you completed it was satisfying enough.
