The shipowner lost $0...
the 100 was stolen he didn't lose it. and he gave $40 in change.. it was willingly given not lost..
Therefore he LOST $0..

He then gave the shopkeeper $100 back, in exchange for $60 of merchandise and $40 cash.

-60 (this is the $60 worth of merchandise you give him)
-40 (this is the change)
=-100


Either way you lose $100 if you count the merchandise as money lost as well.
