I've noticed that the lyrical rapper are still the ones selling the most records. The trap artists may get radio play more, but Cole, Kendrick, Sean, Logic, and Drake are still selling more records. Future is probably the only trap artist that's selling high-end numbers.

That's cause the kids without jobs and money are the majority who listen to these fakkits that mumble rap, I'm spending my money on good albums I can listen to over and over and never get tired of, lyrics beats a gimic every damn time imo

This really gives me hope for this generation.

No, popularity does not always equal quality but there comes a certain point where your numbers gotta match your hype. Like I said, it's been 3 years of dudes swearing this nikka is a creative genius and vanguard of hip-hop's future. Swearing he's mainstream enough to crossover and hit yet street enough to keep it street. 3 years of being held in that light and you still hitting 35k with streams?

Or are we going to say this is all Lyor's fault? Cause it is stupid to keep selling mixtapes that are on free sites, or putting retail albums on free sites, whatever the fukk the story is, but is he that out of touch business wise?

What were you expecting him to sell?
Sales don't matter to me, it's a dope project. But my takeaway is

1) Thugger is not making strides with the mainstream (white people), nor is he really fostering a loyal fanbase. He's good for 14-18k sales based on his last few projects.

2) Not selling doesn't mean you aren't popping...but stagnant or decreasing sales suggests you aren't growing

3) Future transcended the typical "club rapper" trappings whereas Thugger hasn't

4) I think this is partially because he is terrible live and can't really perform decently. It's hard to build a true following if you aren't touring consistently. Thugger is largely a studio creation when it comes to his vocals, the engineering, etc. It's hard to gain popularity if the people don't see you. Not everyone is The Beatles, who largely became a "studio band" with the later/better albums and stopped touring consistently. It didn't matter, they were still popular. This is 2016 tho and rap, that's not gonna fly.

Real shyt..

Hella tempted to make a young thug is a industry plant thread right now. Though I'm not hip to the atl scene it never appeared to me that this dude had an actual fanbase. Rich Homie quan had an organic grassroots following from Type Of Way and Thug pretty much road his coat tails into the mainstream. Before the rich gang shyt started the first and only time I ever heard of him was when he was wearing a dress for some photoshoot. He didn't have poppin shows (still don't), didn't have a cross over singles (still don't), all his projects were HARD bricks.

I feel like people higher up are very invested in trying to make this young thug thing happen. The fishy part is Quan has been phased out of the mainstream while thug seems to be sticking around despite his lack of success. I mean Barter 6 was a fukkin flop, how many other artists draw the attention and services of Lyor Cohen fresh off 13k sales?

The only place I saw people vouching for this mango's buzz was the booth and these nikkas don't go outside so I knew not to trust it

Thug aint no plant

Yea he doesnt really do interviews so its hard for casual people to wanna gravitate towards em. Also musically, its like they dont push the right songs or drop his album/mixtape at the right time. His first album shoulda been at the HEIGHT of Danny Glover and Stoner. Early 2014 that is. It was all RIGHT THERE for him and they blew it. Future dropped Monster and it was basically over for Thug and Quan

Monster didnt effect Thug and Quan

Thug was never going to a mainstream rapper like that. He was always destined to have a Gucci, Boosie, Yo gotti career arch and this is what a @Poitier is saying.

Quan sound has been ripped off so much and he can't make a complete project to save his life

So... whose to blame? :patrice:

Genius level, creative, master different flows, yada yada. He ain't selling well, at all. Three albums in and he's still getting around 30k? And he's a big name right? Someone is to blame. 300, Lyor, Jeffery, somebody.

His user base. He attracts the 16-24 year old market. That demo knows how to steal an album off the internet.

The more "lyrical" rappers have an older demo. Older folks buy more albums.

Just my thoughts :yeshrug:

I don't care if Thug is gay, acts gay, is a plant, whatever.

He is clearly extremely talented, and I will continue to listen to everything he puts out.

But it's been 2 years since lifestyle. He needs to drop a fukking mainstream hit song. Top 5. Now. Maybe he needs the j Cole treatment. It's very clear random people aren't gonna start listening to him until he does. No more excuses Jeffery. Drop a huge hit, or admit you aren't really a trancendent talent.
