And these Youtubers also generate hype for a game. Like again for COD, Youtubers will post trailers/breakdowns/multiplayer gameplay before the game's release and this will get people excited for the game.
with that said, devs owe these youtubers for all that free marketing. :troll:

im betting the pewdiepie article is what made phil comment in the first place. pewdiepies popularity is not the standard, but the point still remains. devs either deserve a cut of these lets plays, or they should be taken off youtube. you cant legally post up games or copyrighted songs in their entirety, same should be applied to games (unless the devs OK it)
Games are software a song isn't. All the value a song has to offer is to listen to it. Watching someone else playing a game isn't the value of the game itself.

:what: What part of the main purpose of video games as a physical, hands on interactive media don't you understand? If someone is giving a hands on walkthrough on iphone usage, does Apple deserve revenue too?

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
People don't understand..a lot of these youtube cats no matter what theyre reviewing or using..be it games..hair products..etc etc..the devs actually give them products for free after a while so they can review it depending on how many people follow u...they even brought in Jackfrags and a bunch of other youtubers who play Battlefield for input on the development of Battlefield Hardline..a lot of the time those youtube videos help the brand more than hurt it..

Its free advertising. Minecraft would not be as big as it is without the Youtube videos. If people like the video, its a good chance they are going to buy the game.

Difference between a game and a movie is a movie is intended to be viewed and a game is intended to be played. Me watching someone play a game gives me NO actual way to play the game unless I buy the system and the game.

To me, all this "piracy" talk is bullshyt. From movies, to software, to games...if I didn't "pirate" the shyt, I wouldn't have went out and bought the shyt anyway so who am I hurting?
This is true.

Now I own a ton of comics in trade format....but if it wasn't for piracy, I wouldn't own a single one.

I'll be damned if I spend money on something I dont even know is good or not :childplease:

If I buy a game I've paid the price of admission. The developer doesn't own the rights to me playing the game in my living room and if I film that then that's mine. It's a piece of software. if I film myself typing up a novel and the novel goes on to become the next Hunger Game sensation and the videos do billions on Youtube I don't owe Microsoft any extra money because I used their software in the videos because I already paid Microsoft for the software.

These developers are salty because someone has figured out how to generate revenue through a loophole using their software. They want that extra revenue too but if they attempt to capture that revenue stream it would cease to exist. The same developers aren't paying the cost to create those Youtube videos. They don't buy the console, the capture equipment, or computers involved. They just see somebody else making a buck and feel entitled to it.

You're one of the main gaming posters and I thought you knew better.

When you purchase a video game, you don't own it. You purchased a license to access the game and do whatever they allow you to, with it.

guys like pewdiepie make millions off videos that are in the tens of millions of views. you cant tell me at least a 1/4th of these people wouldnt have purchased the game if they couldn't watch it in its entirety on youtube

kids watch these videos for tips.. i don't think a youtube video stops people from buying games. Why don't they game developers make their own videos?

no they dont watch them for tips. they watch them because they like watching some commentators play full games in its entirety. im willing to wager that over half of the people viewing video games online dont even have the console in particular

edit: your second point, i agree. a lot of devs would be better off creating their own youtube star

I got stuck on Uncharted 2,went to youtube found what to do, and then continued playing the game. If it wasn't for that I would have went on ign for a walk through. I believe you tubers help sell GOOD GAMES. If your game sucks maybe bad youtube reviews can hurt.

thats fine, i've watched full games on youtube just because i wanted to see what its about w/o playing the actual game. there's millions and millions of other people that watch lets plays for the same exact reason.

if devs dont want their games posted in its entirety, they should have their wishes respected.i know if i made a game with an interesting story like LoU or Mass Effect 2, the last thing i'd want is all the cutscenes posted up in full online.

look at the number of studios that have closed their doors in the last five years. i dont think people realize how close gaming is to a crash. hes right, the studio should get a percentage of the videos revenue.
