I was thinking along the same lines. Augusta is a military town/Masters World Arena with a few trailer parks and traps, but definitely not as poor/poverty stricken as some are making it seem.

There are definitely guns here, and these kids definitely can get to them. Just wasn't that type of fight. People were being called from work to come and watch, that type of thing.

I think our accents may have some of ya'll fooled:lupe:

Exactly. South Augusta kinda shytty but there is no place in south Augusta where I don't feel safe at anytime. Don't even need protection. I mean it's sorta bad as in you might get your car or house broken into but violent shyt like this is isolated.

Exactly. A gas station or waffle house fight/stolen car is pretty much all Augusta is gonna do.

This type of thing, especially in that neighborhood is a classic example of shyt getting out of hand...

All I see is RIP Mahjay up and down my TL, this was not meant to happen, this is not who we are:to:

Nine people have been charged with murder after a row between two high school girls over 'a boy and some racy photos' led to the death of a teenager.

Demajhay Bell, 18, was stabbed in the neck by a friend during a chaotic street brawl at the house of one of the feuding girls in Hephzibah, South Augusta.

The teenager, who stayed inside for most of the fighting, was wounded in the deadly melee which featured a 50-strong mob wielding baseball bats, knives and pipes last Friday. He died in hospital two days later.

Friends and relatives of each girl joined in and soon there were two groups with up to 50 people threatening to settle the dispute in the streets, according to Eyvette Byrd, 39 - the mother of one of the feuding girls who is 15.

She is also the mother of 21-year-old Demetrius Harris Jr, who stabbed Demajhay. Both have been charged with aggrieved assault and felony murder.

The mob showed up at the home at around 1.45pm and fighting spilled onto the street. It was captured on video and later posted on Youtube.

The horrifying two-minute video shows two women locked in a fistfight while baseball bat wielding bystanders circle them.

One uses the bat to smash onto the hood of a Dodge Charger car which drives after him and plows into a neighbor's front lawn.

Another young man gets hit in the arm with a baseball bat, at which point onlookers scream 'Call 991'.

Car attack: At one point in the video a car is repeatedly and deliberately driven at a group of the fighting men

At the end of the harrowing footage a person can be seen running past clutching his bloody neck - who police have confirmed was Demajhay.

The teenager managed to flee in a car and stopped when he saw an officer in a patrol car.

He was rushed to hospital but had already lost a significant amount of blood by the time he was given medical attention.

Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree told ABC news: 'This is one of the most senseless murders that we've had.

'The brawl itself was a coordinated effort. The group in the neighborhood knew the other group was coming to fight.'

Nine people - ranging in age from 18 to 39 - have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault and felony murder.

Demetrius Lamont Harris Jr, 21, has been identified as the suspect accused of stabbing Demajhay by the sheriff's office.

The suspects include Quiauna Henley, 35, her daughter Quiasha Henley, 18, A'Lexis Cain, 18, Tyteanna Thomas, 18, Raheem Jobes, 19, Myah Dunbar, 18, and Terry Lee Daniels, 19 and Eyvette Byrd, 39.

Sheriff Roundtree said that Demajhay's death was not intended.

'He was not even participating,' he said, adding that Bell been inside a relative's house for much of the fighting and had just emerged to see what was happening.

'The person who stabbed him was a friend of his. He wasn't the intended victim.'

Authorities have arrested nine people. Georgia law defines felony murder as a death caused during the commission of another felony.

The charge does not require intent to kill and it carries an automatic life sentence.

The sheriff said all suspects charged in the case remained jailed Thursday. It was not immediately known how many of them had defense attorneys.

Cheryl Karounos, spokeswoman for the Georgia Public Defender's Office, said the agency's Augusta office was representing one of the suspects, 35-year-old Quiauna Henley, who is Quiasha Henley’s mother - one of the suspects charged with murder.

She declined to comment further on the case.

This week, a jury in Bridgeport, Connecticut, will begin hearing evidence in the murder trial of Cherelle Baldwin, a 24-year-old Black woman who stands accused of first-degree murder in the death of her ex-boyfriend, Jeffrey Brown, in 2013. Baldwin has already been through this once before – during her first trial, which lasted six weeks in 2015, 11 out of 12 jurors wanted to consider lesser charges or acquit her altogether, but the lone 12th juror dug in their heels, so the judge declared a mistrial. In a surprising move, the prosecution doubled down, vowing to prosecute Baldwin for first-degree murder all over again, even though she says Brown’s death was an accident, and that she was only defending herself against a man who had been abusive and was trying to kill her.

In mid-2013, Baldwin had been granted a restraining order against Brown, her ex-boyfriend and the father of her then-toddler son, who had allegedly been abusive. The court order did no good, however, and Brown continued to call, text and show up at her home to harass her. On on the morning of May 18, Brown sent Baldwin a series of threatening texts, telling her,“I said what I said so u could take it however u want u but after today u will have to call the cops cuz it over today” and “u will see how crazy shyt will get today.”

Shortly thereafter, she says he showed up to her house, crawled in through a window, and allegedly threatened her with a knife and choked her with his belt. According to the police affidavit, Baldwin managed to get away and took off running to the garage, getting in her car. “He managed to get in the car and proceeded to choke her again,” the affidavit stated. “Then she got out and fell as she did and the car ran over her leg and that he also got out to chase her(,)and the rest happen(ed) too fast and she wasn’t sure how he ended up in front of the car.”

By the time the police showed up, Brown was dead, his body pinned by Baldwin’s vehicle. Baldwin had a broken leg and was barely conscious. Their son was found unharmed inside the house. Baldwin maintained that she wasn’t sure how Brown ended up in front of the car, but that he was trying to kill her. According to police, her statements did not match the “physical evidence,” but besides that, they concluded, she had “ample time to consider the actions she took before the events that caused and led to the death of Jeffrey Brown.”

Three weeks later, Baldwin was charged with first degree murder, with bail set at $1 million, even though Baldwin had no prior arrests. Unable to afford bail, Baldwin has spent the better part of three years at the York Correctional Institution. Last week, according to Huffington Post, “38 domestic violence organizations from across the country called for state prosecutors to drop the charges against Baldwin, arguing that the case was a prime example of how black domestic violence victims are disproportionally targeted by the criminal justice system when they try to protect themselves.”

Drawing parallels between this case and that of Marissa Alexander, the Black woman sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a warning shot at her abusive ex, Holly Krig, director of organizing for Moms United Against Violence and Incarceration, told Huffington Post:

“We want to present this story in the context of domestic violence, and highlight the fact that this is part of an old, longstanding pattern of criminalizing black women for acts of self-defense. It seems to me if a woman cannot defend herself from an act of violence, what is her legal option? Is a perfect victim one who does not survive? It’s a no-win situation, particularly for black women.”

And the statistics show how true this is. According to Rewire:

Domestic violence is more likely to be fatal for Black women. The Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American Community found that, although they comprise 8 percent of the nation’s population, Black women make up29 percent of all women killed in domestic violence homicides. Black women are twice as likely to be killed by an abusive spouse and four times more likely to be murdered by a boyfriend or girlfriend than white women.

At the same time, society and the justice system has a difficult time viewing Black women as victims. “In my experience in the criminal court system, Black women are inherently questioned and inherently distrusted,” Lenina Trinidad, an attorney who has represented domestic violence victims, said. “The system and the players don’t find them as credible.”

Baldwin’s family members corroborate her stories of Brown’s abuse and controlling behavior, saying he would steal her car keys so she couldn’t go anywhere and keep the once family-oriented young woman isolated. By 2011, Baldwin was pregnant. Then, on New Year’s Day 2012, shortly after she had the baby, Brown wrecked Baldwin’s car. When she asked him about the accident, Baldwin’s mother, Cynthia Long, recounted to Rewire, “he shook her and the baby while she was holding the baby.” Baldwin declined to call the police.

Baldwin got a new job at the Yale-New Haven Hospital, and Brown, being unemployed, was supposed to be in charge of child care — instead, he would frequently steal her car and disappear for hours. With no one to take care of the baby, Baldwin was regularly late to work; eventually, she was fired.

In February 2013, Baldwin came home to find Brown throwing all of her clothes out the house; when she tried to call 911, he ripped the phone out of her hand and threw it to the ground. He was arrested, and the couple broke up, but the split reportedly didn’t stop the abuse. Brown continued to stalk, harass and threaten his ex, regularly putting her in the position of capitulating to his demands for the safety of her child, her family and herself. The abuse and harassment escalated after Brown was convicted of breach of peace on May 8, 10 days before he died.

“She was really, really scared,” Baldwin’s cousin Latreesh, who Baldwin confided to about the abuse, told Rewire. “She thought he was following her.”

On Mother’s Day 2013, there was yet another incident. This time, Brown showed up to a restaurant where Baldwin was celebrating the holiday with their son and her mother, and called her from the parking lot, demanding that she bring their child outside or he would make a scene. While their meal wasn’t over, Baldwin abruptly left the restaurant, following Brown’s orders.

Six days after that, he was dead.

Long can’t comprehend the State’s motivation in retrying her daughter, despite there being ample evidence of abuse and a hung jury sympathetic to her plight.

“She should have been able to live her life without him harassing her,” Long said, calling the case against her daughter a waste of taxpayer dollars. “Jeffrey wanted full control, and he couldn’t have it anymore. Cherelle had moved on with her life. Women of color should be able to protect themselves. There should be a right to self-defense. No one should live in fear in their own home.”

I'm not going to quote that article again, but near the end it says that if any of them get convicted, it's an automatic life sentence:patrice:
not sure but i imagine in Georgia a murder conviction carries a lengthy amount of time which for all intents and purposes basically a life sentence:aicmon:
