Do we agree that music is influential upon the listener?

What you interpret as positive, and building... is subjective.

for one person, that kumbaya, we shall overcome rah rah shyt might be what he needs to hear.

for another, it might Jeezy rapping about money, cars, drugs, clothes and hoes.

Let's be real about this tho....the Chief Keef's and Bobby Shmurda's have less effect on black youth... than failing school systems, neighborhoods with little legal economic opportunity, health care systems that are designed to make people who can't afford it, be shunned by it...a legal system that preys upon blacks etc.

The Black Church has probably done far more harm, than any gangsta rapper..... but we're not gonna talk about that:yes:

There are many systematic elements preying on blacks

I feel like the church teaches positive values. You might not believe in JC but that's throwing the baby out with the bath water, because there are some good values being taught, so I would disagree that the church has done more harm than any gangster rapper. Look at Agent Ross out here poisoning the community. At this point the damage he's doing is arguably catching up to the real Rick Ross.

Stopping the music wouldn't stop a lot of the social ills. But, to say well, "Keef got his family out the hood," yeah that's great, but his music and music like it in my mind is pushing young people toward crime. And, that's probably intentional and part of a bigger plan.

I would think the damage done by that poison music outweighs rachet artists buying their rachet families houses.

This doesn't just effect the black community - you could've easily expanded your reach on this issue but defining the effect this also has on all cultures as a whole - that this extends beyond, don't be ignorant enough to bee alienating your cause. Nice job buddy :sas1:

I'm sorry dude, but you really can't be serious if you think "Love Sosa" is pushing teens to a life of crime. No one in the history of humanity has heard ever heard the new chief keef mixtape and decided to drop out of school and sell dope. Kids in the hood look up to fukking dope dealers not chief keef. The only kids who are doing more crimes because of chief keef are gds trying to kill him.

You're trivializing the issue by zooming into a reframe. It's the negativity on the consciousness

Wasn't being sarcastic. I'm legit interested.
Jay Electronica is probably my favorite conscious rapper right now, Isaiah Rashad is cool too, Capital STEEZ before he died, Joey Purp, Schoolboy Q's old shyt is somewhat positive too

I don't think ALL crime stops if the "Chief Keef's" stopping making music. But I think there are young people influenced by that music who have committed crimes because of listening to those artists. Poverty and all the other social and structural traps are going to create crime no doubt I agree. That is not going anywhere even if the drill music stops. BUT if you're telling me you think kids listening to Keef and the rest of that genre isn't causing them to go out and commit crimes I disagree. The Rosses and Keefs definitely have a hand in crimes going on out here. Remember "Bangin in Little Rock?" All the cut scenes were west coast gangster rap, the kids had the lyrics memorized, they were brainwashed by the music and it was clear the music played a role in what they were doing. Again, is music 100% at fault nah! But, are there people out here who have lost their lives over somebody being influenced by "gangsta rap"? absolutely.

How come you guys never bring Wu- Tang, Tupac, Biggie, or Nas into these discussions? All of which rapped about selling drugs and shooting people albeit less than Chief Keef and Bobby Shmurda

Honestly . . people have an affection to those artists. We were younger when we were exposed to it, they didn't always have warning labels on cigarettes. Tupac was definitely used for an agenda. They all played a part, even unwittingly. We just like their music more. Hollywood has been making poisonous movies for a long time. I'm not a moral crusader I'm just aware of the agenda . . but now they're combining the music with celebrated ignorance

I'm not into what I've heard from Jay Electronica. But the rest of them I would check out. I didn't come in the post to be a contrarian azzhole, I just wish the center, the dominant discourse on these records would be positive rather than the black cards, bottles, drugs, etc. I think music has the power to change lives for the better. So I would hope that would happen one day.

It's been verified that a guy killed two cops while listening to a Tupac album. Allegedly it was his motivation for doing it. How many people have been murdered to Love Sosa?
