The weight is almost over for Shawn Porter
Jun 04, 2015 By Jason Scavone

It’s been a long time since Shawn Porter fought at anything other than 147 pounds.

Shawn-Porter-Eric-Bone.jpg

Shawn Porter didn't have any trouble hitting 147 pounds for Erick Bone, and he doesn't anticipate any trouble getting to 144 for Adrien Broner.

In 2010, Porter campaigned at 154—which was still on the light side for him after a high school football career. Since then, he’s found success at 147. Now he’s dropping down to 144 to fight Adrien Broner at a catchweight June 20 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena (8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT) live on NBC. And here you thought the move was to add weight the deeper a guy progresses in his career.

Early indication makes it seem that cutting to 144 isn’t going to be a problem for Shawn Porter, who was sitting at 154 five weeks before the fight.

“I feel great because I’ve never been this light this soon in camp,” Porter said. “I understand what that means leading up to the last week of camp.”

The catchweight might have been a point of contention for some fighters, a difficult part of the negotiation process or something undertaken grudgingly. Porter just laughs it off.

“That’s nothing to do with me at all,” he said. “They tell me what it is and I go for it.”

Shawn Porter keeps the home fires burning for Adrien Broner fight
Jun 10, 2015 By Jason Scavone

Plenty of fighters crave the Spartan, distraction-free confines of a training camp far from their hometowns. For Shawn Porter, though, it was an easy choice to keep his camp where he makes his home, and where he’ll be fighting Adrien Broner—in Las Vegas, the last city in the country anyone could describe as “Spartan.”

Shawn-Porter-Homecamp.jpg

Shawn Porter is playing the homebody this training camp.

This fight we especially want to keep everything in house because the fight is here,” he said. “Anything we need we’ll ship it in, we will get it ready.”

Training out of his regular gym just west of the Las Vegas Strip, Shawn Porter eschewed going up to the Bay Area in California, something he and his team have done in the past.

Instead, he’ll opt for the creature comforts of home, where he can do things like watch the Cleveland Cavaliers try to hold off the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals.

“I have a projector screen and I like to turn it up loud and feel like I’m there,” he said.

Maybe LeBron can come over next week for workouts when the finals are over with. Porter is hoping to have the crib tricked out even more by then.

“We do have a few people here right now there that are working on our gym,” Porter said. “Hopefully it will be a week or two before the fight and we can get in there and do some things, play around a little bit. Other than that, massages will be done at home, icing, hot baths, all that stuff. This is the perfect opportunity for us to prepare the right way that we need to prepare for this fight.”

A tale of two cities: Adrien Broner and Shawn Porter reignite the Battle for Ohio. Here’s how things stand thus far.
Jun 10, 2015 By Jason Bracelin

Cleveland has given us so much, namely rock ‘n’ roll, Chef Boyardee and the padded bicycle seat. Cincinnati, care to retort?

Of course the city does, countering strong as the birthplace of Neil Armstrong; the home of the very first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings; and the proud, proud perfector of the chili fart (more on that later).

Ever since both cities were founded in the late 18th century, they’ve been natural rivals: Cleveland in the north and Cincy in the south, polar opposites in terms of geography, politics and, well, just about everything really.

One thing that both cities do share, though, is a rich boxing pedigree, which continues to this day.

Now, the Battle for Ohio takes on a new, even more heated dimension when Cleveland’s Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs) takes on Cincinnati’s Adrien Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) on June 20 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, which will air on NBC at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT.

Prior to their fight, let’s take a look at how the Battle for Ohio has fared thus far:

5 Most embarrassing historical moment: Jerry Springer as Mayor vs Burning Rivers

Springer.jpg

Yes, the man who presided over a show that featured a fellow who married a horse also presided over the Queen City for a year in 1977.

That’s almost as embarrassing as the average guest on The Jerry Springer Show (save for the chick who dressed as a cartoon pony, she was cool).

Basically, the program did for humanity’s reputation what the razor blade-imbedded apple did for Halloween snacks.

Cleveland, though, has had its share of ignominious moments, none more publicized than when the Cuyahoga River caught on fire (again) in 1969 because it was so full of oil and other pollutants (to be fair, when it comes to things that Clevelanders tend to consider health risks, they think of Steelers fans and sobriety, so the oversight was understandable).

Bright side: The event did help catalyze the modern conservationist movement. That, and about 1,001 punch lines.

Edge: Cleveland

4 Football teams: Browns vs Bengals

teams.jpg

This is like choosing between a sprained groin and a trip to a proctologist with poor depth perception.

Yeah, the Bengals are a playoff team these days, but they were known as the Bungles throughout the ‘90s for a reason: Come draft day, their decision making was somewhere between that of your average Girls Gone Wild cast member, a box of hair and the inventor of Auto-Tune.

As for the Browns, well, the Factory of Sadness is adding new shifts as we speak, such is the prodigious output of misery produced on a daily basis.

What, are they run by some crazy drunk guy or something?

Oh, wait, no, that’s their quarterback.

Take that, stupid, stupid hope.

Edge: Cincinnati

3 TV sitcoms set in the city: “WKRP in Cincinnati” vs “The Drew Carey Show”

Shows.jpg

Dr. Johnny Fever, Herb Tarlek and Venus Flytrap?

Dude, WKRP could win this one on character names alone.

How cool was this ‘70s sitcom, set in a radio station back when DJs actually picked the songs they played?

To this day its reruns will save you money on air conditioning.

Also, Loni Anderson.

As for The Drew Carey Show, it gave Cleveland some much needed boosterism beginning in the mid-‘90s.

That said, it also reaffirmed plenty of Midwestern stereotypes, you know, the same old moldering clichés—that they’re all a bunch of hard-working doughballs who make coffee-enhanced beer in their garages, have cross-dressing siblings and apply eyeliner with a paint roller.

Edge: Cincinnati

2 Signature food: Chili vs the Polish Boy sandwich

food.jpg

Whoever the winner is here, it’s definitely not digestive tracts or olfactory senses.

We all know the fine citizens of Cincinnati love their chili: They go through 2 million pounds of the stuff annually, along with 850,000 pounds of shredded cheese and countless amounts of air freshner.

As for the Polish Boy, it’s a to-die-for (literally) sausage sandwich slathered in french fries, coleslaw and instant regret.

Best served with a gallon drum of Pepto, a roll of toilet paper and a defibrillator.

Yeah, it’s that good.

Edge: Cleveland

1 Boxing legacy: Aaron Pryor, Freddie Miller, Ezzard Charles, Adrien Broner and others vs Don King, Joey Maxim, Johnny Kilbane, Shawn Porter, etc.

Broner-Porter_0.jpg

Cincinnati’s boxing history is almost as deep as the Ohio River that runs through the city.

There’s Aaron Pryor, arguable the best 140-pound fighter of the 20th century; Hall of Fame 126-pounder Freddie Miller; Ezzard Charles, maybe the greatest 175-pounder ever; and contemporary kingpin Adrien Broner.

Cleveland, though, has checked plenty of chins with 175-pound Hall of Famer Joey Maxim, who once famously defeated Sugar Ray Robinson; the polarizing-but-still-legendary promoter Don King; 126-pound all-time great Johnny Kilbane and, of course, current favorite son Shawn Porter.

Edge: To be determined June 20

Broner-Porter: Flores Off, Waits For New Shumenov Date
Posted by: Jake Donovan on 6/11/2015
By Jake Donovan

A planned cruiserweight bout between Beibut Shumenov and BJ Flores—slated to take place on June 20 in Las Vegas as the chief support to a PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) on NBC event—was scrapped after Shumenov suffered an untimely injury during training camp.

Flores is now apparently off the card altogether—at least in the capacity of a competing fighter—as he will instead wait on a new fight date.

The 36-year old contender was due to appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission to apply for a license, but the item was scrapped from the commission’s monthly agenda hearing Thursday morning in Las Vegas. Such matters are standard practice in Nevada for fighters 35 years of age and older applying for a license in combat sports.

Flores (31-1-1, 20KO) would have entered his first major title fight (albeit an interim version of the cruiserweight belt) of his 12-year career.

Despite the fight postponement, Flores could still remain involved on the card as he regularly serves as a ringside commentator for the PBC on NBC series.

The headlining bout remains intact, with Adrien Broner facing Shawn Porter at a maximum catchweightg of 144 lbs. The main event airs live in primetime on free-to-air NBC.

Damn, I wanted to see that fight too:snoop:

Supposed to have been Broner vs Porter, Spence Jr vs Garcia, and Shumenov vs Flores for the WBA Interim Cruiserweight Championship which was a good card. That hopefully means Robert Easter Jr will make it on primetime then:ehh:

Broner vs. Porter: Tony Weeks to Ref, Judges Named
Posted by: David P. Greisman on 6/11/2015

by David P. Greisman

The referee for the June 20 fight between Adrien Broner and Shawn Porter will be the highly respected Tony Weeks, who was selected for the bout during the June 11 meeting of the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Broner vs. Porter will headline a “Premier Boxing Champions” card airing on NBC. With Broner now fighting at junior welterweight and Porter a welterweight, the fight has a contractual catch-weight of 144 pounds.

Weeks has not worked fights before involving either boxer, according to BoxRec.com.

The judges, meanwhile, will be Adalaide Byrd, Eric Cheek and Dave Moretti.

Byrd has not worked any of Broner’s fights before. She was the judge for Porter’s technical knockout of Paulie Malignaggi and for Porter’s majority decision loss to Kell Brook. Byrd was one of the two judges to have Brook ahead on the scorecards.

Cheek worked an early Broner fight, the boxer’s fifth pro bout, a speedy stoppage of Scott Furney back in 2008. He is not listed as having worked any of Porter’s fights.

Moretti is not listed as having worked either man’s fights.

Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions, who identified himself as the promoter of an event that also has Warriors Boxing as a co-promoter, said there were no objections to these officials.
