As someone who is dealing with major depression/anxiety issues I can agree with some of these posts. In our (black folk) community there are a ton of people dealing with mental disorders that go undiagnosed either because these families don't have the money to pay for help, or it just gets shrugged off as either "oh he just bad" or " he just needs prayer". It wasn't until I began to get help that I realized how severe this problem really is in our community. I checked in to a mental health facility late last year and remember it only being about 3 black patients total in the wing I was in and not that many more throughout the facility. I did intensive group therapy sessions everyday for 3 months and there were times where I was the only black person in the group.
Knowing what I know now I grew up around a lot of people with bi-polar, depression, sociopaths, etc. and none of them have ever been diagnosed. A good number of them are in prison now and a good number have been in the prison system at some point in their life.
My family was kind of unsure about me getting professional help they thought I just needed to pray and rest even though by the time I had reached my breaking point and was either gonna take myself out or somebody else I had all but lost my faith. Getting help actually helped restore my faith and it definitely put me in a positive mental space as well as physically. Now I'm back to getting this money, providing for my family, moving on plans to secure my future, back in the gym with a vengeance working out getting my fine nikka Friday on everyday, all while still going to one on one sessions with my therapist every couple of weeks. Some positive reinforcement as well as having a non-biased person to vent to works wonders,
