you don't have to necessarily believe in reincarnation, but it makes sense in a lot of aspects.
Thread poll is even right now.
My vote is somewhere in the space between yes and no
It's either one or the other, you either believe or you don't.
Wishful thinking.
Truth is, life is random, unfair, and often cruel. Bad things happen to good people all the time and vice versa. Many people are never punished or brought to justice for their misdeeds and many people are born or thrust into situations they did absolutely nothing to deserve. There are people born with HIV and little kids sitting in the hospital with cancer as we speak. Ain't shyt fair.
However, the idea that there's some sort of cosmic justice and that everybody will ultimately get what they deserve is comforting to someone who lives in an inherently unfair world. So people ultimately choose to believe in things like karma because it makes them feel better. It's understandable and I can't really blame anybody for wanting to believe in it, even if the concept is illogical.
The universe is totally indifferent to the actions of men. You have to realize all these ideas came about when we lacked the knowledge we have now. To the universe there is no such thing as a bad or a good person. The universe is amoral and there are plenty of examples in modern society we just choose to ignore them for the sake of hope. Religion, karma, all this stems from people's hope that their actions matter in the grand scheme of things.

Good and evil is a concept that is used to manipulate the masses through karma, religion, etc. How can you measure how good or bad something is? There is no instrument to measure good or evil to an exact degree. Those terms are definable because humans created them, like the thousands of other words derived from human made concepts. Morality is a manmade invention just like the rest of these philosophies, albeit it is one of the more believable ones. Does the lion fear retribution for slaughtering a young gazelle? No my friend, because until humans came along, things were not right or wrong, they just were. There are very few actions that are inherently good or evil, it is all part of human beings desire to be compensated for their perceived "good" and punished for the "bad". Don't you ever wonder why the Abrahamic religions all cater to basic human desires, eternal justice, immortality, that we are the chosen ones? This is kind of what Buddhism teaches, and this is where I'll disagree. The "universe" encompasses everything in existence - material and spiritual entities alike. Good and evil are measurable factors just like hot and cold, bitter and sweet, etc. They absolutely do exist, and the differences between the two have to be definable enough for a law like karma to even have meaning in the first place.
as humans we are able to perceive at a base level the differences between these dual concepts on a higher level than other entities, that's what separates us from the beasts and other animals/life-forms. The key to understanding the illusion that has all of mankind confused and acting like savages is to find that balance between attachment and detachment and carry ones self accordingly.
