Meh. Not surprised. I teach in a Title I school and can vouch for this type of mentality. Kids will always be lazy if adults let them. But a lot of blk kids have internalized this mentality that learning or being academically successful is somehow betraying ur community, or race. "You trying to act white."
I hear it all the time. I literally have access to IQ scores of students on my caseload. I have blk students with IQ scores in the above average range who are literally failing every class (partially b/c public ed is some shyt) b/c they don't want people to know how smart they are.

These days blk children have to make a harsh social decision between being alienated from their community or not taking school seriously. That shift starts to happen around the end of 6th grade.

What do you know about these studies that have been done/are been done where students are paid based on their grades. So just an example, you might get $50 for every A, $30 for every B, $10 for every C, etc. Do you think something like that would incentivize kids in a school like yours to try and do better? or just encourage massive cheating?

Definitely. People want to believe black folks hate educated blacks, when the opposite is true. They've done countless studies showing that black folks value education more than other groups, even if they don't necessary obtain it. "you trying to act white" doesn't automatically mean you are anti-education or referring to proper speech

From nasal breathing changes while speaking to the conscious efforts to blame the victims, are examples of "you trying to act white," especially in academia where it encourages black students that their community's plight are mostly self inflected and could be avoided if they choose to abandon "low brow"/"militant" views of "blaming the whiteman"

LOL @ people thinking gang members are dumb in school, in Middle and High School they had good grades like everyone else sure there was wild nikkas that hardly showed up and always got suspended, but that was the exception, not the norm.

TBH as a 90s baby bullying ended in Middle School, I went to a HS that had kids from every hood in BK and I never seen anyone get bullied.
