Ghanaian here. This nonsense about Nkrumah being corrupt and creating white elephants are spouted by people who cant still see the bigger picture. Nkrumah never hid his priorities. He made it clear that Ghana could only survive and prosper if we focus not just on primary production but also added value to them. He knew and has been proven right that African countries could only survive if we had strong alliances and cooperation among ourselves, that is why he spent a lot of money in several other African countries to secure their independence.
The forces of imperialism saw his direction and were using agents in Ghana to frustrate that. Ghana as a country was less than a decade old ffs, dude had to do what was necessary to realize the vision.
Knowing what we know now about how correct he was, how can you still hold on to such excuses used to destroy the one person who tried so hard to develop Ghana.

Fact is most great nations had an authoritarian regime which could implement projects without any hindrances at the time of their rise. Then when they attained a certain level of development politics became more inclusive.

The partisanship of democracies (especially in chaotic African countries) might be an obstacle to development.

How do you know he would have been a president for life? Are you telling me that he should have ignored all those agents who were being used to destroy his vision for Ghana and Africa. Nkrumah is the only president who successfully unified all of Ghana. He didnt even have a single personal house in Ghana yet you are here talking about corruption. Remember this was a country less than 6 years old that had serious ambitions. Given his vision and the direction he was taking Ghana i would have been ok with him being president for a decade or more. Everybody and their mother thought they could run things, but we now know it aint so.
We were already in the RIGHT direction. I can understand if you had these views back then, but how can you still hold on to such views when you have the benefit of hindsight?
The only president who has been close to Nkrumah's legacy is Kuffour. After his 8 years see what the current idiots running my country has sent it to. Now we are back under IMF when Kuffour took us out of their grips. What is the value in a 4 year election when it only wastes resources and halts development.
