hip hop and rap is larry holmes status now and have been since like 97'. this ain't to say it ain't been a few good albums here and there over the past 17 years but it's been few and far in between imo

it continues to get shytter and shytter and the bar continues to get lowered as the years go by to the point where the shytty music comes to be acknowledged as great music, lol. it's a fukkin' a joke now

i'll always have my hip hop and rap albums from the late 80's into the mid 90's (96' to be exact) to go back and listen to on occasion but i'm done with all of this new shyt. hip hop and rap music as a whole equals pure shyt now :camby:

I agree with you on the most part. Back then when a nikka shared a quotable rhyme for a rapper it was some intelligent mind blowing bar. Nowadays I see nikkas going "OHHHHHH!" over basic lame ass bars that don't display any real wit or cleverness. I don't need to mention specific artists, but any true hip hop head will know what I am talking about.

There is still a ton of great hip hip out there. You just have to know where it is. Just ask the homie @hustlemania . There is so much untapped rap music out there. But the average fan simply doesn't care to do a little bit of research.
this is the problem.. folks were so pre-conditioned to have music put in their lap, they just stopped looking.. i stay digging for music.. theres so much good music out here.. :wow:

maybe i should put the homie @stomachlines onto game.. seems like #TheRecordBreakingCrew is something he might need right about now.. :ld:

I think most folks have an issue with the idea that in order to be "successful" you need to be an extremely watered down version of what rappers were like in the 90s.

Back then albums like "The Diary" received top ratings in rap magazines, and you knew that other rap fans would be copping it based on those reviews alone, it gave rap fans something to talk about, tracks to discuss, that feeling of being part of the community. So while people today may be able to find talent if they look hard enough, they will only be able to discuss that rap talent with others also willing to "look hard enough", and this limits the hip hop experience in my opinion, because you can't talk about best rap releases of the year for example, if only a handful of people you know listened to what you are listening to.

I don't agree with the you're not looking hard enough idea. I spend hours and hours on spotify, sound cloud and blogs digging... For anything decent. There's some gems but in general it's slim pickings and it's not like I want something to sound like it's from the 90s. I want something new and fresh, like when you first heard supreme clientele. I even give yeezus its due for being original even if flawed.

Thing is, genres age. Jazz and soul ain't popping like they used to. And hip hop is basically watered down and been co-opted into pop.

I'm the same breh. I listen to a lot of rappers that a lot of nikkas never heard of even back in the 90s. However your average music fan is like your average person, who is unable to accept or process that others tastes my differ from theirs and get offended if that is the case. I think certain rappers are trash, but if he makes another person happy so be it. My only issue is when nikkas quote wack ass lyrics as if it is some hot shyt and then start trying to discredit legends who are clearly more talented. That shyt happens a lot.
