I don't think certain cultures having higher standards of success than others is the prime determinant. I think socioeconomic status of identifiable groups is a pretty complex thing that can't be reduced to culture influence. I don't know a lot about this so I can't speak with authority, but I suspect immigration plays a strong role in this. Indians coming to North America are probably a pretty successful and driven segment of their population.

Well, there are two basic groups of Indian Americans. Professionals with degrees and certs. They are making bank. Then, there are business owners who may not necessarily have a degree but are running a restaurant, mini-mart, or retail store. These guys are making a bit less than the professionals but have broken out of the Indian caste system and pulled a George Jefferson on all y'alls.
Everyone who falls outside of these two groups are under the median. But, there aren't enough lower income Indian Americans to drop the median down to the $50,000.

But Americans have yet to fully heal from the Great Recession, which officially ended five years ago. Median income remains 3.1% below its June 2009 level of $55,589. That's in large part because unemployment remained high in the early years of the recovery, according to Sentier.

"Even though technically the recovery began in June 2009 ... the broad measures of unemployment were still high," said Gordon Green, a partner at Sentier. "As people found jobs, their incomes went up and then we started to see incomes turn around."

Though many people are doing better nowadays, the gains are not spread evenly.
