Smh Triump massive. Don't downplay it. I seen a whole news cast in Canada recite the deck verse and they ain't all even rap fans.

You have no idea...
Triumph wasn't big out here, not gonna downplay its impact elsewhere, but this song was never played on the radio, we didn't go to school discussing triumph, of course it never made any party playlist, that was just another video on the box :manny:

wasnt a real comeback. Dre wasnt really written off post NWA, he just left.

Dre, did receive a lot of criticism post-Aftermath Compilation.

Thats why so many songs on 2001 referenced him falling off

"Forgot About Dre" especially

yea. the chronic was like the rap equivalent to bell biv devoe's poison album.

on some, 'what are you gonna do without your homies?' type chit.

not really a comeback attempt.

Yeah - you could argue that his group broke up and he was going for broke with a whole new crew. Comeback of sorts i guess. I definitely agree its not typically considered a comeback like LL with Mama or Nas with Stillmatic. Or Ghost with Supreme Clientele.

It got radio play in the bay - but not daytime radio play.

I bet most of the nikkas saying "Still DRE wasn't that big" weren't even fukking 10 years old when that record dropped. :mjlol:

Still DRE was HUGE. I was at a east coast college then and you heard it everywhere you went.

i was in 10th grade actually.

of course it got play at an east coast college. white folks swear by aftermath records. im talking bout the core audience. that whole dre comeback run was moreso regional on a street level.

btw, i was heavier into hip-hop at 10 years old than the majority of this board will ever be, so even if i was 10, it wouldnt matter.

Yea, like sway and king tech radio play...that song was not hitting out here breh. Of course it did with the "real hip hop heads" but as far as what was moving the masses, triumph didn't have an impact like it seems to have out east. We were full on to bad boy, missy and timbo, no limit started bubbling, bay still had locals dropping, bone, etc.

ok. understandable. i just have a different recollection of it. maybe it's because i was at a big east coast school. but that shyt was playing everywhere. radio. parties. not to mention i had it on heavy rotation.

I was, and still am, a huge Wu-Tang fan. So your perspective is valuable as I obviously payed it a lot more attention than the someone who wasn't as big of a fan. I remember the anticipation for that record being through the roof.

not a comeback at all. The public was just like "okay, what's next?" plus Deep Cover came out before that and was a hit so Dre never really missed a step. The Aftermath compilation went plat cuz of the name but not respected. Then The Firm flopped. After that Dre the artist was playing background to Eminem.

One of the first really gritty hip hop music videos that I can remember when you consider the content of the song. This thread is giving me heavy nostalgia.

True.
I wasn't thinking about Deep Cover.
There is no question that 2001 was a comeback.
I'm not saying The Chronic was and 2001 wasn't.
I'm not even saying The Chronic really was a comeback - I was just responding to what the breh @MegaTronBomb! said which I thought was interesting.

It reminds me of If I Ruled the World peaking in the 40s to 50s but It Was Written being the #1 album in the country behind it. :patrice:

If I Ruled the World is the only track from the 90's that I can remember exactly where I was the very first time I heard it on the radio.

And that The Message snippet leading into the music video was perfect.
