He was a GOAT pro athlete, a HOF, a civil rights activist, an author, starred in a movie with Bruce Lee, and was a co star in Naked Gun... .but he's not outgoing and can't relate to people....and isn't comfortable in his own skin...???? :mindblown:

The logic that yall use sometimes man......... :wow:

and nikkas dapped the post on top of it..... :smh:

Brotha I think you and the other kats are both right. Talking to my dad over the years he just said that Kareem was his own man. He wasn't gonna kiss the medias ass or kiss fans ass. He wanted to do shyt his way. He is and was a very intelligent man and out ward thinking so you know that is a problem as a black man that is 7 ft tall and who plays sports.

Kareem could be quiet and out going at the same time. It was just about what he wanted to do. At the end of the day Kareem was gonna do and say what he wanted to do and say. That is why folks in the NBA and media folks have this issue with him. But folks like him and Russell I always saluted because they stood up as black men and called shyt out and never backed down.

Also Russll through the media eyes has become more like able over the years. But for many years the media viewed him as they do Kareem (the old surely black men who called racism out and did not have a filter).

One other note people forget that Kareem would have retired earlier from the Lakers but folks he was doing business stole a lot of is money. So he ended playing longer with the Lakers.

Bill Russell has always been pro black and he always talked about the racism in Boston and how he was treated. He talked about it in this; it was really good
"I didn't play for Boston, I played for the Celtics and Red Auerbach. Boston is a flea market of racism"
-Bill Russell

Dude was bringing championships to Boston almost every year and they still hated him. Instead, they idolized Ted Williams and the Red Sox who weren't winning shyt.
Russell refused to show up at his jersey retirement ceremony at the Garden.
He was also a no-show at his Hall of Fame induction:wow:

You're right. He's more outgoing than people care to admit. Part of the reason he's "intimidating" to some people, is because he's just doesn't like small talk with strangers I guess. People don't want to acknowledge and examine their own sensitivity and entitlement towards demanding Kareem being a constantly smiling, non-debating, go along type of guy. And Kareem isn't having it. Like I said earlier, he's sociable and outgoing on his terms, and that bothers alot of entitled people. He'll hang with Hugh at the Playboy Mansion, he'll be in Leslie Nielsen movies, etc. But that doesn't mean he can't be angry about racial atrocities in America and call out White society for not making amends for them. There's a balance. And people don't understand this. There's plenty of sociable white celebrities who'll turn pseudo-militant on certain issues, and who should be considered angry, crazy, unsociable at times.

The more I hear/read about Kareem the less I like him. It seems like he's bitter about everything, his basketball career, his treatment by the media, and the lack of respect he gets. But you can't have it both ways...because he benefited greatly from the celebrity/fame/fortune that basketball afforded him, but shunned anything that had to do with his responsibilities. I mean the guy was appointed as a global cultural ambassador by the White House, a position no one put a gun to his head and made him accept. Is it really that difficult to conduct yourself in a fitting way? If he was just cordial with people throughout his career do you think a player of his caliber would have to self-advocate for a statue?

Chances are he isn't a best selling author, he definitely isn't doing movies, and he wouldn't have been at the Playboy Mansion because of books. And to be honest, KAJ didn't have an average black man's existence from the time he picked up a basketball. It's like he's chasing the credibility Ali, Brown, and Russell got for activism.

He doesn't seem authentic/confident in his own skin. Maybe that's because he grew up so structured...maybe it's because he was told how to worship, who to marry, even who not NOT invite to his wedding (his parents). But I thought he missed out on a GREAT opportunity to revamp his image and publicly come out against Islamophobia. But it'd go against him being the aloof, private guy that didn't let you into his world...

I'd look at Barry Bonds the same way if he came out trying to redefine his legacy after spending all his career not giving a fukk what everyone thinks. At this point, it seems KAJ did whatever was most convenient for him personally, at that moment in time. And now he's living with the long term repercussions as it pertains to his legacy.
