They wanted to explore stuff that wasn't in the previous movies. And that it presented something that's "there" but they want to experiment with how he experiences it and whether it's something he grows into or blah blah blah. Narrative conventions aside they just didn't put it in because they wanted to be different but it'll be prominent later on
