How I look at it: You're not a cop. Don't feel like you need to step into any situation. If he starts beating on the girl, the most you should do is try to lock him up from behind and restrain him until security or authorities arrive. That is if you know you're in a controlled environment with security nearby or that there are others around who can call the police. This fool's mistake was that he tried to be the knight and shining armor. Stepping in and trying to wrap your arm around that girl like you can control the situation with your mere presence.

Don't get yourself into a fight in a situation where you are not defending yourself or a loved one. If you can physically restrain someone, that should be your goal and should be done when they are truly violent.
