How I look at it: You're not a cop. Don't feel like you need to step into any situation. If he starts beating on the girl, the most you should do is try to lock him up from behind and restrain him until security or authorities arrive. That is if you know you're in a controlled environment with security nearby or that there are others around who can call the police.
