There's a lot of pros and cons to Tomlin, most of them you guys have already covered
I think
@SteelCitySoldier really nailed it. These guys start buying their own hype. When they will have bad games is VERY predictable. They will always be after a really good win or nice winning streak, when they are feeling themselves, and go up against a team they should beat. It's like they just mail in these kinds of games every time. You'd think after YEARS of this happening, someone over there would figure out that in the NFL, every win is precious and you have to treat EVERY game like a must-win. But these dudes get too relaxed with it. It even happens within games. I haven't seen it as much lately, but in past seasons, every time a Tomlin team would get a lead, I'd get nervous as fukk because they'd relax, get cocky, and often times give the lead right back. This team will only play at its potential when their backs are against the wall, and often times they turn it on too late. In the NFL, nobody is so good that they can turn it on when they please, yet this team thinks they can. I don't think they consciously walk around believing that, but they just somehow do not generate the urgency they need unless backed into a corner. I put that on Tomlin.
He also does this really annoying shyt where he is conservative when he should be aggressive, and aggressive when he should be conservative. He is known for going for 2, going for it on 4th down, etc. but then he'll trot out a shaky kicker for a 50+ yard FG in the wind. I mean it's outlandish. And when we desperately need to move the chains and keep a drive alive on a key third down, that is when you can guarantee Ben will launch some low percentage bomb or fade route to a no-name receiver. Like damn I am not some "old school" guy, I like the overall aggressiveness of our offense, but it is so often at the wrong times when it really just makes more sense to try to move the chains, or kick the PAT, or whatever. And there have been painfully stupid game plans built based on this. For instance, against the Dolphins, their run defense was terrible when we played them (probably still is ranked terribly) and Bell barely saw the rock the entire game. Against the Ravens, whose run defense is amazing and secondary is suspect as hell, we just smash Bell right into the line over and over. And Tomlin's excuse was essentially that the Rats weren't scoring either so he wanted to stick with it. WTF? So coach to win 3-0 instead of 50-0? What a shocker, we lost both games, and were our most backbreaking losses this year and the only reason we haven't locked up the north yet. Tomlin coaches far too much toward the philosophy of "they'll never see this coming" when he should coach toward "they are weak here, and we are strong, destroy them until they show they can stop it".
There have also been a few high defensive draft busts that really set the development of the defense back, like Ziggy Hood and Jarvis Jones. We really needed those two to pan out. And a couple of those drafts in the late 2000s gave us nothing, like I believe there are no players from the 08 or 09 draft still on the roster, something like that. We have rebounded in the drafting defense department in recent years, but for a while I was definitely questioning Tomlin's eye for defensive talent, which is odd as he was a DC.
But there is a lot of good to Tomlin too. As frustrating as it is to see a lot of these trends play out, we still do win a lot of games, more than most franchises. He was won a SB and been to another (granted that was a long ass time ago but I believe we can again). He keeps the team playing at relatively high levels despite ridiculous injuries. I truly believe no team has had to battle through injury/suspensions to their BEST PLAYERS more than we have. It feels like every time someone goes down for us, it's some indispensable piece of the team whose unique skill set allows us to play the way we do. Cam, Tuitt, and Ladarius Green are hurt now. Ben always hurt, Le'Veon missed so many games (inc playoffs) due to suspension and injury, AB missed the Denver game last year that NOBODY can convince me we would have lost if he was there (or Bell for that matter). Martavis out all year wtf. I think I heard something like those 4 (Ben, Brown, Bell, Bryant) have only played like one series together or something. The "next man up" mantra isn't just a catchphrase, they will figure out ways to win without their key guys.
I am still confident as long as we beat the Rats tomorrow, we can make a run at it this year. But if Tomlin comes out like he did last time, trying to play an old school smash mouth game, it will play right into their hands AGAIN. Even if they expect it, we need to come out and put all the pressure on their secondary and get Bell involved in the passing game. There is just no way we beat them playing the same way we did last time with the two yards and a cloud of dust shyt. This isn't a dikk sizing contest to see who can be more physical and win a 13-10 game, as much as coaches love to beat their chests over that shyt. Just do the smart thing
