Race is a relatively modern concept
People were judged on culture than skin color
Romans were :mjpls: to literally everyone who wasn't them, even Greeks
Romans had more respect for Africans (especially Egyptians) than Northern Europeans
You were clowned for wearing pants:mjlol:

Funny how we’re so brainwashed under racism that the concept seems incredibly futuristic to the point where it borders fiction.

There weren’t that many black people around in Ancient Rome then so basically they were all the same colour
One third of Rome's territory was in North Africa and a small part of it was in East Africa. They also found Roman coins in Mali and northern Nigeria. Black people were definitely prominent enough in the Empire.

You mean antiquated enough?:patrice:

I think he’s saying the concept is so foreign that it seems unimaginable and also though one would think that getting to that point would be positive progression compared to our current culture which is heavily predicated on race. Granted, the most idealistic scenario would be a world without bias at all. :manny:

I always thought it was wild that we figured out how to split an atom the same time when segregation was common in the US.

Rubbish, it was the most important city in the world outside of Asia, people from England and Spain in the west to India in the east and to Ethiopia in the south would have at least travelled there frequently if not have lived there, to buy and sell goods. It was the New York, Wall Street of the era. How many different ethnic groups do you see in New York today? Rome would have been the same.

They also had, after the civil wars had ended in 30 BCE, increasingly open citizenship laws. Anybody and his family, regardless of race or origin, automatically became a citizen with full rights upon completing 15 years military service. If you join up when you're 16 and get out at 31, you've got the whole rest of your life ahead of you with all the privileges and all the rights of a Roman-born white man
