@Get These Nets regarding your screenshot:

I know who those eastern Ethiopians are, they're south Indians, as Arrian of Nicomedia wrote in his Anabasis of Alexander: "the southern Indians resemble the Ethiopians a great deal in their countenance and complexion, except they are not quite so woolly haired or as broad in the nose."

Rubbish, it was the most important city in the world outside of Asia, people from England and Spain in the west to India in the east and to Ethiopia in the south would have at least travelled there frequently if not have lived there, to buy and sell goods. It was the New York, Wall Street of the era. How many different ethnic groups do you see in New York today? Rome would have been the same.

They also had, after the civil wars had ended in 30 BCE, increasingly open citizenship laws. Anybody and his family, regardless of race or origin, automatically became a citizen with full rights upon completing 15 years military service. If you join up when you're 16 and get out at 31, you've got the whole rest of your life ahead of you with all the privileges and all the rights of a Roman-born white man

New York is on the decline, probably need to get a better comparison.

What's the new hotness?

How should I know? I doubt that it's a bad comparison because Wall Street is still by far the biggest forum for trade in the whole world, it's got by far the largest amount of money flowing through it every day. Of course you can't buy or sell anything of real value on Wall Street, whereas in big ancient cities the trade would have been for actual useful things and not pieces of paper. But it's still the right comparison for me

Uh, no, I am south Indian and I have used that passage from Arrian in the past on this same exact forum to make the same point I am making now: that ancient Greeks and Romans were fully aware of people from different races, but did not feel the need to act like they were fundamentally superior to them. Later Arrian writes about how much he admires Indian society for having abolished slavery, for instance. So although they understood that people were different, they were fully capable of giving praise to different cultures instead of holding their own as the greatest, which is something you see modern Europeans do, as Edward Said wrote in his book Orientalism

If you doubt my claims here, go use the search function. User name Sukairain, search word Arrian, there it is. Exactly as I said.

Now shut the fukk up and go throw your baseless accusations at somebody who actually merits them

Race is a relatively modern concept
People were judged on culture than skin color
Romans were :mjpls: to literally everyone who wasn't them, even Greeks
Romans had more respect for Africans (especially Egyptians) than Northern Europeans
You were clowned for wearing pants:mjlol:

If you read the writings of both Greeks and Romans you’d realize Northern and Western Europe was absolutely shytted on. Northern Europeans is where the word “Barbarian” comes from. And they almost put black people (Egyptian and Nubians) on a pedestal.

The current world we live in now they probably couldn’t even fathom.
