The NBA could rival (maybe even beat) the NFL but it's ineptly managed

Another thing that the NFL has on the NBA is it's regional division rivalries. Those fuel interest. The NBA has no real rivalries at the moment, just made up ones. The NBA tries to sell us that the Knicks/Heat is a rivalry. Lol HOW is that a rivalry? Because once upon a time they had a grueling playoff series and a few players got into an altercation? Lol whenever these two teams play you can be sure to see that video a good 2-3 times during the broadcast, as if to say "Hey! This is a time honored rivalry that goes way back! Trust us! These two teams can't stand each other!"

The NFL has real rivalries because you are in direct competition with the other teams in your division for the same playoff spot. You spend nearly half the season playing those teams. Giants/Eagles, Giants/Cowboys, Jets/Pats, Packers/Bears, Steelers/Ravens... these are real rivalries with real stakes. shyt like this makes being a fan more fun cause it pits the fanbases of these two teams against each other. It elevates the culture for that entire region.

The NBA should put a bigger emphasis on divisions. I mean why else have them?

They do need to shorten the season tho....

Cut that shyt in half or something. Nobody wants to see the Heat vs Wizards 4 times a year. :what:

I however disagree with playoff format be 3 and 1 championship game. Reasons why because last years championship run was the most exciting run since Boston and LA went 7 games. I never be so into a game before, and when Ray hit that three... Things like that makes it worth to sit through 7 games. But you're right 82 regular season games are a bit much.

Look at Miami's road to the finals though. The Bucks, a Rose-less Bulls team, and the Pacers. And yea kudos to Indy for forcin it to 7 but I don't think anyone ever really thought they had a shot. Fact is Miami is supremely more talented than ALL of those teams, which in my opinion defeats the purpose of having a 7 game series because OF COURSE the team with the most talent is gonna win. Is that all we watch sports for though? To find out which teams have the most talent? Don't we know that before we even watch the games? Did you need to see Miami slaughter Milwuakee over the course of a week and a half to know that they were the better team on paper?

Championships shouldn't be won in the front office, it should be won by the players. Sure in a best of 7 Miami has a huge advantage given they have so much talent, but in a best of 3 (or in a single game)... anything can happen.

Imagine watching a best of 3 between Miami and Indy... and Indy takes Game 1 in Miami. NOW let's see what the Heat are made of. You say your champions? Prove it muthafukka. Game 2 is in Indy. Lose and you're out.

I personally think the NBA isn't as popular because there aren't too many white faces. They don't see people that look like them, so they don't watch.

NBA should either cut regular season games or reduce the number of post-season teams from 16 to 12. When it comes to sports leagues though, they never contract and only expand because of the extra revenue they can get so it will never happen.. I prefer series over 1 game playoffs though I understand the excitement of 1 game playoffs but a classic series is the best because they get personal and build classic rivalries.

A long regular season combined with every team making the playoffs will always be a bad model competitively speaking.

you have a point, I'm just saying that series was a entertaining watch. That's all.

A good analogy would be, if you go to a Primetime Boxing main event. And dude gets knocked out the first 30 secs of the round 1. Would you feel you got your money's worth... Most likely not.

Hell naw I wouldn't feel like I got my money's worth. And yea sure, in a best of 3 you risk one team just flat out dominating and taking the first 2 games without much of a problem... but wouldn't you rather watch THAT than a long, drawn out 7 game series between Goliath and David?

Does David even beat Goliath if you gave Goliath 6 more tries?

Too many teams make the playoffs so the regular season is meaningless,Also because too many teams make the playoffs most of the first round is a waste of time with teams with no shot to win a title

99.9% of the time u can predict who will win before the season starts so theyres no drama

Playoffs are way too drawn out,the nba is basically an 8 hour movie with subtitles that you already know the ending of

Even Barkley says it all the time on TNT.

"In the NBA playoffs, the best team always wins the series."

Well we usually KNOW which team is better before the series even starts. That's not why we watch the games. We KNOW the Thunder are better than the Nuggets so what's the point of watching a 7 game series where the outcome is all but a forgone conclusion? How can you get behind these teams? What is there to root for? What is there to get excited for?

I wanna go into a series thinking, "Wow, I don't know who's gonna win this shyt."

THAT'S exciting.

Look at this though. If the NBA adpoted college rules and all of a sudden more white players came in...NFL would have a serious problem.

its not the rules breh

there are just 30 nba teams and like 200 college teams

cacs just can't make the cut no matter the rules.....unless the nba outlawed jumping there will never be many white players

Is the NBA in some kind of financial jeopardy that I don't know about? Last time I checked there are AVERAGE players making $20+ milly a year.

I agree that there is more drama in the NFL playoffs dude to one game elimination, but the fact is, the NBA would lose RIDICULOUS amounts of money if they reduced their playoffs to one game eliminations. This is about TV money. Less games equals less money. You will not gain enough new fans(if any) to compensate for the loss in TV revenue by so drastically changing the format.

I do not agree that overall basketball is more popular than football in America. Have you seen how serious even Pop Warner football is? My homegirl has an 8 year old. This dude has practice dam near every day. They go out of town to play games. Then in H.S. you got Friday Night Lights. And look at the amount of attention college football gets. I'm watching CNN now and every Friday they are dedicating a whole segment to whatever rivalry game is playing that weekend. Nobody really cares about college basketball until the tournament starts.

Basketball will never get as big as football because there are not enough white guys playing it. Period.

True Michael Jordan is probably the biggest sports star ever, but could you imagine if he was white? OMG.

I might be in the minority but I agree with the OP...as I get older I watch less an less basketball until playoffs start. 82 regular season games....aint nobody got time for all that especially since half are meaningless. With football I know I can just sit down on a sunday with redzone and catch ever game. As for the playoffs maybe not to the extent the OP suggest but something like 3-3-5-5 would be more than enough for me. Best of 7 first fukkin round was the WOAT idea

I disagree that there is no drama in the NBA. There are always at least 3 or 4 teams that could win it all. Chicago and OK suffered from injuries last year. And c'mon the Spurs SHOULD have won it all in Game 6.
