You could possibly get a 2012 or 2013 Honda Accord for close to 8k. Maybe 8.5k

Buy it cash and be done with it.

The Accord has a pretty solid look and is very reliable. Low maintenance costs as well.

Nah. You can easily drop 3k at the mechanic within the first year or so of owning it. My first car was an old BMW and I put a lot of money into it.

Plus driving a 12 year old German car kinda makes you look like like a poser, imo.

I can't lie, I want an 80's 3 series as a second car, but I think they're damn near classics at this point.

OP, the best you can do for your money is either VW or Mazda.
Edit: Also, Nissan is the exception to the 'Japanese cars are always reliable' rule
