When it came out, it was literally like the first song to truly try something different. It was a complete gamble.

We're not talking andre 3000 level where he was more funk based, this was purely like a revolution in sonics because of how it was mixed and the production on it. It was like a mix of current dance music, electronica, and that classic hip-hop sound. Its hard to describe if you're younger since this is all many of you know nowadays

There was NOTHING Like it when it came out.

Even the synths weren't something that were being used yet. That low-fi sound you hear now thats been popularized? Not popular at the time. I doubt anyone in the mainstream was doing it.

It was like the precursor to all that moody music you hear on soundcloud but it wasn't like that 90s chill wave jazz hip-hop...this was something fresh

Heres the thing, when everyone heard it, they INSTANTLY knew it was unique. It was damn near the moment when people realized that Kanye had basically created something unique.

Flashing Lights (Kanye West song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Many music publications rated it one of the best songs of the decade in ANY genre, and certainly among the best in the year it came out.

It was such a huge song he did THREE videos for it:

:rudy: It was just a rip off of this song

To me, on 'Late Registration' he was a rapper/producer making songs that ended up crossing over.

By 'Graduation' he was a bonafide pop star. He made that same artistic jump that Wayne made between Carter 2 and 3. Whereas Wayne went in on the mixtapes and guest appearances, Ye was producing both radio and underground hits (He had credits for Janet Jackson, Maroon 5 and Mobb Deep in '05 alone). The sales battle with 50 was a smart idea to ensure that he got to that spot.

That said, I prefer 'Late Registration' - it was a crossroads for so many interesting moments in Black art. You had the South popping off, Jamie fresh off his Oscar, doing his Ray impression on 'Gold Digger', Jay and Nas on the same album for the first time, Cam at the tail end of the Diplomats dealings with Roc A Fella, underground cats like Lupe and Consequence putting in work and on top of that all, Jay as president of Def Jam. It felt like a movie with cameos by a bunch of my favourite actors.

If I think LR, I instantly hear the production assisted by Jon Brion and I just can't agree.

CD>LR>GR

Don't forget GR was the album that got Kanye all these white and asian fans too.
The same cacs that are praising yeezus.

The more time passes, the more I can see that being the case. Late Registration is Kanye in his prime as a "Rapper". Graduation is when he became a true "Artist".

I've honestly never heard anyone say that LR is better than Graduation....

Graduation was a complete rap album, one of my favorites...

People sleep on LR though, the production on there is really :wow:

Crack Music, We Major, Drive Slow, Touch the Sky, Gold Digger all are still dope

Graduation is his most "people pleasing" album. What's it... 11 songs? None in that 6 minutes + range I believe. No skits. Most have traditional song structure. Packed with some big hits. He didn't make a big effort to change the game or drop here. He peeped that electro/synth wave started by FS/LS from '06 and incorporated it into the album. The album features (at the time) his biggest Pop move in terms of sound and is general his "whitest" album. He also dropped a mixtape where he raps over Belle & Sebastien and Rich Boy. A taste of things to come thematically.

Can't Tell Me Nothing was his first out and out attempt at a street/hood anthem. He had never courted the hood or its sound to such a strong extent on his own albums at that point. He got that DJ Toomp street banger stimulus package and delivered one of the defining songs of that era/sound.

So you have Stronger which is THE pop move. Even though Kanye was already a megastar, he's an Urban artist with an urban sound this was a departure.

Then he has Good Life - powered by a Mike Jackson RnB record. It's hit so many demographics with 3 songs here.

Then the album was solid. The synths/electro vibes was the risk but all in all it's a very safe album (for Kanye). Songs like The Glory, Everything That I Am, Champion, even Good Morning aren't as ambitious as 90% of the songs on his other albums. But Kanye had arrived as a superstar on this one. It's a super easy listen too. It's not long. Challenging. No wild statements. Has hits by the ton.

LR is the better album for me though. But a more difficult listen. This has loads of guest appearances. Long songs. Long ass album. Plenty of skits. Hella ambitious songs that you either love or think is over produced. But it's just a higher level of artistry than Graduation.

Graduation is Kanye trying Michael Jackson's Thriller (King of Pop / Rap)
Late Registration is Kanye trying golden Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life (classic era).

I genuinely believe that was teh aims of those albums.
