It was my day off and I was at home watching a Michael Moore documentary DVD, either Bowling for Columbine or Fahrenheit 9/11, I forgot which one, and when it finished I turned back to cable (CNN) and saw the news. I literally was like because I couldn't believe it. I called my mom who was at work and she was crying on the phone. I texted/called my friends and EVERYONE was crying, emotional, etc.

This was the only famous person's death that I experienced in my lifetime that had EVERYONE shook and sad at the same time. Black, white, latino, old, young, etc EVERYONE was shook.

I was sitting outside my grandmama house and she told me to come inside like the sky was falling. Had to watch cnn in complete silence

After we literally sat there and gave him a eulogy like he was our family member.. shyt crazy...

Ngl I was working at Disney World, doing the entrances/exits at EPCOT. Some kids came through and noticed my name was Michael and were like "did you hear MJ just died?".

NBA Draft Day was that day and I was running on fumes. I come back home to take a nap real quick before I had to go back to MSG and I saw that Farrah Fawcett had died before I took a power nap. I woke up, got my stuff, went back to work. I didn't even know MJ had died (all I had heard was that he was in the hospital; it woulda crushed me had I known right then and there, but people in the crowd knew. I just thought people were still talking about Farrah Fawcett.)

After the draft, it was super late and I stopped by the Apollo because as y'all know there was a big crowd there paying their respects playing his music. That's when it really hit cuz I was too consumed with work to dwell on it. Then I get home tired as hell, but I left my TV on since all MTV played was Michael Jackson videos and tributes.

I was browsing the internet like I'm doing now, then clicked on the CNN Website, where his death was printed in large bold print.

He had one of the saddest funerals I ever saw on television for a celebrity. We, and the people in my generation practically felt like we grew up with Michael Jackson and The Jackson Five.

What sucked was that last case destroyed him..I doubt he had much fun in those last years. feds Ransacked Neverland so he didn't have a home...and other shyt of course.

This was the day I started taking TMZ seriously since before this moment they were all about silly celebrities scandal shyt. They had the drop before anyone else and I remember them dropping the scoop on like UPN or CW or something, along with their tweet and internet postings.

I just sat there in awe before calling my parents to break it to them first and then going down my important contacts list.

I didn't really know much about MJ or his music outside of a few songs at that age but my mom and older fam knew .

I obviously knew who Michael was, but I was too young at the time to appreciate him like I do now. I remember his death being a huge deal because it was talked about everywhere. I learned a lot about him after he died and became a bigger fan because of it. It's still crazy to me to think a person like that actually existed, because no one else comes close to his level of celebrity. The sad part is that in the years before that, Michael’s reputation wasn't what it used to be. He was just another guy but he had everyone going crazy when the This is It tour was announced. Then after he died, people suddenly remembered who he was and the impact he had on music.

His health had been getting worse at the time of his death. I don't know if he would have been able to do all 50 shows at that point in his life. Especially since he was still dealing with addiction and he had nothing but yes men in his circle. This Smokey Robinson interview sheds some light on why things ended up the way they did. I had no idea they installed a metal plate in Michael’s head after the Pepsi incident which is what led to him having migraines.

I remember folks arguing in the thread that no credible source had reported it, it was just TMZ and they kept doubling down that MJ had indeed passed.

Definitely was a the whole world stopped for a moment type of event
