If someone does not purchase all the songs or the album it is not counted as albums sold.

Not sure if some of you guys have joined the rest of us in 2014 but people are picking/choosing which songs to download. They don't need to pay for full albums anymore.

The music industry is not 'dying' anymore than it was 'dying' in 1999/2000 when everyone said that the first time....

THIS.

People forget that there was a time in the 90's, where instead of buying the album for a single you liked, you could buy Maxi singles, with 2-4 singles for like $2-3.... and that they got rid of those, because it cost the same amount to produce those single discs, as it did for full albums.

when you could cop Maxi singles, a buyer was more inclined to pay a small amount for just what they wanted, than pay $12-15 for an album full of songs they may or may not like.

had the 90's and early 2000's had the option to pick and choose exactly what songs you wanted to purchase, all sorts of albums would've never made the sales they did.

Heavy metal band Slipknot just dropped a new album today. Every new album they've dropped has gone platinum (except a live concert album, which still went gold).

Imma boutta go support dat biiiiitch. \m/

Slipknot is unlike many many acts out.

for one, their fans are on some ride or die type shyt when it comes to supporting them. Secondly, they exist in a space where their fans actually value their music, so they show up to shows, buy tons of merch and albums.

Slipknot fans are like Tech N9ne fans and Juggalos on steroids

My honest opinion, this has been one of the best years in terms of music quality in the last decade.

Digital music sources like Spotify makes people not want to buy albums. I know I listened to more music this year than the last two because of Spotify alone.

Pharrell's Girl
MJ's Xscape
Prince's double album release

>>>>>>>>>

Anything in the last couple years alone.

Cadillactica sounding like a strong release, Mastermind and Oxymoron were dope, as were Future Islands and Common's albums.

Respectable artists like Beck, Toni Braxton & Babyface, Bruce Springsteen, Del, Foster The People, Pharoahe Monch, etc. had albums.

Quality isn't the main issue, it's the lack of truly great artists in pop culture and the way people access music that's making sales drop even more so.

Here is the complete album release list, a lot of solid names:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_2014_albums

Now we don't have GREAT artists like the 80's and 90's.

No, Jay-Z, Eminem, Beyonce, Wayne, Drake , Lady Gaga, Arctic Monkeys, White Stripes, and Katy Perry aren't on the same level as 80's-90's MJ, Prince, Whitney, Madonna, Mariah, Janet, U2, Guns N' Roses, George Michael, etc. People are fooling themselves if they think so.

I think this year closely resembled the 80's bands. Maybe some one hit wonders, but definitely some great songs. Except the top spots aren't nearly as high as that era.

Agree definitely now's music scene has that 80s feel - a mix of one hit wonders and good artist who will only be around for 1-2 mainstream projects but will have a good underground/online/live career if they take care of their brand.
I think it's a GREAT time for producers and actual writers - they are getting work right now and the more international you go the wider your fanbase can be - physically or digitally in 2015 and beyond.....
no matter how much cookie cutter everybody sound like they from the south simple minded bass drop tink tink no lyric music there is - there will always be MORE quality projects out there , it just takes more time actually trying to digest the abyss of music out there now.

2014 wasn't a bad year for music by any means, but ANY reason to claim that music today sucks is a valid reason.

In today's over saturation of ish gettin flooded, if people are listening to bad music... it's their own faults lol. There is so much to choose from; a little digging and you'll find suttin just right for your own personal taste.

The underground is flourishing.

i agree people buy singles, but at the same time, that aint the revenue you get from an album sale, and let's not act like all these streaming services haven't made it just as easy to compile you favorite hits for free accessible whenever wherever...selling singles is not saving the music industry.

Selling singles was never intended to save the industry, it was intended to make Apple rich... iTunes is why album sales have declined at the rates they have over the last decade.

Outside of the fact that the usual suspects who go platinum when they drop music haven't released albums this year.... we've seen the major label start of quite a few careers this year ( Tinashe, YG, Kid Ink,DJ Mustard,Ty Dolla Sign,Schoolboy Q,Vince Staples) and last year ( ASAP Rocky,French Montana,Ferg,Tyler The Creator,Earl Sweatshirt,Dom Kennedy) and it'd be quite the anomaly for any of these acts to go platinum their first time up to bat in the majors.
