Democratic presidential debate on Nov. 20 headed for Tyler Perry’s studio complex

We’re being told that the contract has yet to be signed, but plans are for the fifth debate of Democratic presidential candidates to be held on Nov. 20 at Tyler Perry Studios on the grounds of what once was Fort McPherson.


Updated at 9:15 p.m.: Stacey Abrams confirmed the above in a Twitter message:

The newly opened $250 million studio is the only major film studio in the nation owned by an African American. The debate is certain to point to a crowning achievement for a once-struggling playwright who, more than 20 years ago, had been kicked out of his apartment and was living out of a car.

That’s a message sure to be celebrated by Democrats who will be depending on a strong turn-out by African-Americans, who made up 60% of primary voters in 2018, in the 2020 election season.

Here’s irony for you: Since he bought 330 acres at Fort McPherson in 2015, Perry said he has built 12 massive sound stages for other Hollywood studios to rent.

Most importantly, there's a replica of the White House for his upcoming presidential television series, "The Oval."

Also remember that the debate, hosted by MSNBC and The Washington Post, will have an all-female brace of moderators. Georgia’s new anti-abortion “heartbeat” law, put on hold by a federal judge, has been a sensitive issue for Georgia’s budding movie and TV industry -- with boycotts postponed while the new measure is litigated.

We’re hearing that the Democratic National Committee had wanted the debate to be held in Sandy Springs, at the city’s new entertainment complex -- to bolster U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath, D-Marietta. An announcement had been scheduled for Monday.

But protests from Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, we’re told, had forced a reconsideration of the Fort McPherson property. We’ve reached out to the Bottoms administration, but have yet to hear back.

It's not faux outrage and the fact that you want to brush aside real criticism as faux outrage tells me all I need to know about you - - you're attempting to deflect instead of addressing the issue head on.

Bernie Sanders should have been there - - for decency reasons. Not doing so has caused him some political blowback over it.

No one is saying doctors are bad, just that their incredibly high compensation is a leech on the system. Doctors are MASSIVELY overpaid in the US compared to other countries. There is no way to feasibly do M4A without either cutting doctors' salaries or massively boosting the tax burden on the middle class, beyond even what they will save with a new M4A system. The math just doesn't add up.

And they pay a lot more here to go through school. Y’all are bugging thinking they don’t deserve a couple hunnid g’s after 10-16+ years of school and fellowships and 200-300k in student loan debt

Medical School tuition costs and student debt are both issues that need to be addressed, but ultimately the quality of life for doctors will need to drop if M4A or any form of quality universal healthcare is to be adopted. Medicine shouldn't be an field one goes into to get rich. I don't see a problem with a GP having around the same quality of life as a public defender or teacher (which should go up) and a surgeon having the same as a professor.

I like Abrams that is why I want her in the senate. Booker Scott, and Harris(if you want to consider her Black) are the only Black senators, and Scott is a complete fukkboy. We been someone like Abrams questing judicial nominees. There are two seats up for grabs in Georgia. Georgia is a tough state for Dems so we need strong candidates, and Abrams is probably the strongest candidate in the state. It is critically important that the Dems take the Senate.

I think that’s going to be a tough sell. Doctors deserve the money they get. If you cut pay it might discourage people from going into that field. Especially since Med School, and the other heath related schools are super demanding. Unless the government treat it like the VA. I know doctors sometime work at the VA for a lower wage to get their student loan debt forgiven. Either that or they will have to make med school, pharmacy school, physical therapy, and the rest of the health schools damn near free.
