2022 NBA Finals on ABC is 5th least-watched series since 1988

Is there anything that can be done to increase viewership?

That’s what happens when every damn game is on at 9pm with the next day being a workday.

Eastern Standard Time is the WOAT timezone for being a sports fan, you can't convince me otherwise. I was on EST in college and a west coast national TV game would be coming on at 9:30p on a weekday. I'd be falling asleep before half time. PAC-12 football games would kickoff at 10:30p. :mjtf:

In western timezones you can watch games and still have a little time to do something afterwards or just go to bed at a reasonable time.

flip side: day games are torture at 10AM.

The games was coming on late as hell. Seems like the nba was too worried about west coast viewers getting off work and having time to catch the beginning of the games

They shoot a lot of threes in college basketball (not to mention the slower pace), but they still watch that. The NBA in their eyes are “a bunch of overpaid spoiled brats.” They’ll be fans of a player in college but don’t even follow them once they jump to the league.

I hate when people use raw numbers like this. It literally says in the op that the NBA 12.5 is more valuable than previous 12.4 due to market share increases.

Where going to have a conversation one day that having a smaller number but bigger TV share is why the next TV deal is projected to be 75 billion vs it’s 27 billion currently

2 things

1. Ratings don’t truly capture the pulse anymore of what viewers are watching , illegal streams for sports and things like Netflix have completely changed the game. It’s like how we don’t look at album sales anymore, it’s all streaming projections and shyt (which is still flawed but atleast it’s something). The TV ratings business hasn’t quite caught up to measuring that.

2. The decision Silver has made to make the NBA the social activist league has turned some viewers off no doubt. They’re hoping to take the short term hit (pissing off older whites) with the long term benefit (attracting more young gen X viewers). With that said, sometimes people just wanna crack open a beer and watch the game, politics and sports is a tricky topic. Now what the NBA is hoping is that this blip in ratings in only temporary and that in a few years, ratings will be back to usual levels. We’ll just have to see.

All in all 12.8 M average for an NBA finals between 2 of the most popular markets is mid as hell, but the shares for each game weren’t so bad so it might not be as bleak as the raw numbers show. I can only imagine how much worse these would be if it was Bucks vs Suns or some shyt.

The last Finals that truly captured Americas attention was Cavs Warriors 2016.

With no pandemic/bubble team shyt, a finals featuring a lebron led-lakers vs the miami heat(with butler and great white hope tyler herro) is doing very well ratingswise

This year should have been averaging 20 millions viewers tho. I mean its boston vs the gsw. A big legendary market vs the most popular nba team in 10 years with the face of the league on it
Celtics are like 4th in their own market as far as fans caring about the team
