2022 NBA Finals on ABC is 5th least-watched series since 1988

Is there anything that can be done to increase viewership?

As much as you can critic lebron he is still the most valued assets in basketball, his presense alone gets people to watch based on rooting to see failure or success.
There is no way a lebron james final vs celtics with AD is ever this rating.

I wrote about this shyt before Bron stepped foot in the NBA. The NBA oversaturated their marketing into MJ because Nike was making money off his likeness, not them. It didnt help that MJ delivered. shyt…they even gave him his own propaganda minister in Ahmad Rashad. :russ: They paid the price after he left. Even the year he “retired” in 94’ the league saw a MASSIVE dip in viewership.

The NBA model has LONG been shytty.
The NBA is the most popular sports league(globally, not just American) in the social media sphere and is still signing huge TV contracts. I don't see anything shytty about their model right now.

Highly doubt the Pats >>> the Sox. And let the Bruins win a Stanley cup. They’ll forget all about them 17 the Celtics brought to town

In america, nba> nhl and boston is not the exception to the rule

And the pats took the #1 spot over the sox right after the 2017 super bowl comeback win against Atlanta. Sox were obviously more popular than the Pats in the 2000s but not in The 2010s. And right now they are above the sox and will be for a while. Its the result of the 20 years of dominance and chips with the goat qb tom brady and goat coach :beli:

In general yes, but Boston and Philadelphia are the rare cities where the NHL team is just as popular as the NBA team. In the case of Boston, hockey in general is very big up there. I say is more like Pats are 1, Red Sox are 2, Celtics and Bruins are 3A and 3B depending who is doing better. So right now Celtics are ahead based on success this season and likely in the years to come

TV ratings are a very narrow measure of the NBA's relative popularity.

I don't even pay attention to them because just like comparing player stats from the 80's today, there's no way to make a head to head comparison.

If that was the case, then why is Silver panicking in trying to to do the mid-season tournament. Those ratings matter where people are willing to admit or not as the NBA wants all the leverage they can get when it comes to negotiations.

Anyways, the problem is what I said a long while ago in that a lot of the fans that left during the pandemic weren’t going to come back right away as they found other means of occupying their time. It will take years before they come back if they do at all. Yes, the NBA has grown their product those social media and whatnot, but you could make the valid argument that it's hurt the product overall as it's more cooler in viewers eyes to talk about the sport that it is to watch and consume the product.

Popular in a :gurl: sense. Not about games.

Plus…social media has made “viewers” feel as if they missed nothing because they rather watch highlights than actual games.

Its a shytty model breh. :camby:

If the Knicks were in the ECF the game could start at 3:30 AM and they'd tune in.

nikkaz in New York sleeping schedule is 5:00am to 3:00pm on weekdays. On weekends they get home at 10:00am with the tranny From the after party. They’ll watch the finals from the club smoking a hookah.

Where do the Celtics rank in popularity in Boston? @BucciMane @Raquinotj 3rd? 4th

Don’t the Bruins get better local tv ratings than the Celtics?

They had jobs in '94 too. When it's this deep in the playoffs, a hardcore fan will deal with it. Even a casual fan will stomach a late finals. Why? Because their careers will take a backseat to the parade when they call out sick. It's a little different than staying up late at night in February to watch a road game vs. Sacramento. shyt, back in the day, you had school the next day, but you figured out a way right?

If it's the finals and your team is on and the first thought is "I can't because I got work the next day," then the team isn't as important to you as you think it is.

That's ok. NY was just an example. You can lump in the whole Eastern Time Zone if you want. There's a whole generation of people who are more willing to cut shyt out like sports to watch and do something else.

I distinctly remember watching NBA finals games around 7pm eastern. You cant have them shyts on at 9pm on work nights. No excuse for them not to start earlier on Sunday’s.

To have an honest conversation, they gotta find a way to normalize ratings across technological eras, especially the streaming era of 2015+

Anyway, the NBA doesn’t have a big casual fanbase, not sure if any leagues can up numbers in this environment for series style playoffs. Try single elimination and let the fukkery increase ratings :yeshrug:

Streaming isn't the NBA's problem though. They're in a situation where it's more cooler to talk about their sport on social media than it is to actually watch it live. They can brag about all the social media engagement they want, but those numbers are useless if fans aren't watching the games like that.
