what is the significance of the fact the 1st generation and 2nd generation have different levels of english? There's obviously a completely relevant difference between the two groups when it comes to language capabilities![]()
yeah i am confused, i dont understand what this paragraph meansOk so just to be clear, your position is that Italian-American identity and Chinese-American identity are distinctions without a difference and the two groups are indistinguishable because America successfully obliterated their respective ethnic backgrounds? Aren't you the one complaining about all these ethnic immigrants speaking different languages? I think it is you who is confused.
Like half of Godfather II is subtitled because they're speaking Italian man![]()
yes in the early parts vito lived in an Italian enclave but even them he was speaking some english, if you analyze the godfather from a social perspective the entire godfather saga is the story of how ethnic enclaves and multilingualism disappeared and the culmination of the story is Michael trying to integrate into WASP society
NYC immigration history is not a story of conformity and English language supremacy, it's a story of ethnic enclaves and multilingualism
i dont really understand your version of reality, but trump and cuomo, for example, are products of NYC immigration and they are perfect examples of comformity and english language supremacy, and their lives represent the ending of ethnic enclaves and multilingualism of 20th century immigration, which is a good thing
I would love for you to share the nyc immigration narratives that dont end with conformity and english language supremacy
now today there are new immigrants in NYC, im suggesting they should be treated the same way 20th century immigrants were treated with the ultimate goal being conformity and english language supremacy . I dont think the government should pander to multilingualism, there is no evidence that that is a good thing and its definitely not the american tradition.
hmm i didnt say that 1st gen immigrants abandoned their language , i didnt even say they became fluent, what i said is that there was a lot of pressure to learn english and non english speakers were not catered to by the government1st gen immigrants abandoning their language and to become fluent in English is not the traditionally American way of dealing with immigrants, outside of the relatively rare cases of immigrants moving to low-immigrant areas, so definitely not NYC.
In fact, let me just dead this whole conversation right now:
Study debunks myth that early immigrants quickly learned English
the story you posted is a bunch of gibberish about some german immigrants in bumfuk wisconson, there is nothing typical about it, and in the end the language and enclaves disappeared, which is a good thing
you really thought you did something by googling some bulsh*t article LMAO
