This is not healthy, and won't teach him how to keep the weight off, which is ultimately the long term goal.

Actually its the healthiest thing you can do for your body. Fasting detoxes the body of all its toxins. You rebuild damaged cells. You increase levels of growth hormone and stem cells.

And you can keep the weight off permenantly cause it becomes your new lifestyle. Around late December I started fasting. I was around 185 lbs. Its currently early March and I'm at 154 lbs. I'm not only leaner but also stronger. I lift more now at 154 than I did at 185. Meaning the 30 lbs I've lost were almost all fat and not muscle. I've been hovering around the 155-160 lbs mark for the last month. At 5'11" that's probably my ideal weight. However, my body composition isn't where I want it to be so I'm still trying to cut but also build muscle. It'll be hard for me to go back to being a flabby n sick 185 lbs after being a sherreded 155 lbs especially given how much I enjoy fasting and eating healthy now.

You assume people won't keep the weight off because you think fasting is some sort of quick results torture diet. When that couldn't be further from the truth. Its a lifestyle that once you get into is very hard to leave. You might not believe me but I actually enjoy the days I'm fasting more than the days I eat.

I've not gone 300 days without food (only really obese people should try that cause they have the fat reserves to do so). I typically do 3 days fasts. This week I'm trying to fast for 7 days just to see if I can do it. From my experience doing 3 day fasts, I actually have the most energy during the fasting days. What happens is our bodies while fasting starts using its own fat reserves as energy. As a result you don't really feel hungry or tired. I'm able to go to the gym and lift intensely even though I haven't eaten in 2-3 days. Working out in a fasted state is actually optimal because you lose way more body fat while fasted than you do if you ate before the workout.

Now onto your muscle loss question. One of the amazing things about fasting is you actually don't lose muscle mass while fasting. Just think of it this way. When our ancestors were living as hunter-gatherers in the African savanna 100,000 years ago they would go days without food because food wasn't as plentiful back then. Remember they had to hunt to eat. So during those intervals where they wouldn't be eating, do you think it would be optimal for our bodies to start eating its own muscle mass for energy? If it did that then our ancestors wouldn't have the strength to go hunting and save themselves from starvation. Since our body is trying to keep us in the best possible state so that we continue to survive, it will not start eating its own muscle mass until it has gone through all of its fat reserves. Thus, when you are fasting as long as you have fat in your body you will not lose muscle. Incredibly you can actually gain muscle while fasting. Your body will prioritize things like building muscle when you are fasting over other things because its trying to make sure you are as strong as possible so that you don't starve to death once the fat reserves run out.

You need peotein intake to grow muscle, how you getting that fasting?

I lost 56 pounds by doing these steps

-no pop
-no alcohol
-drink plenty of water
-limit fast food meals
-eat those plain Cheerios for breakfast with a banana. Avoid sweet cereals and pancakes.
-squeeze in some vegetables
-no eating past 8:00pm
-limit sodium intake to 1,500 mg a day
-Workout at least 4 days a week. Burn at least 1000 calories on the treadmill

Sorry about that part. I was unclear. Fasting isn't when your muscles grow. Its when you body cleans itself out. After you break your fast and you eat is when your muscles will grow.

Think of it like a computer with serious bugs. Fasting is like resetting the computer to its factory settings. You clean out all the bad stuff slowing down the system and can get back to working order.

I know from experience that I typically build the most muscle and gain the most strength in the week or so after a long fast.

eliminate carbs and sugar from your diet and the weight will melt off
I lost 15lbs in a month and i wasn't that fat to begin with (195->177). And I haven't done any exercise cause it's been cold/snowy here.
I imagine if someone 280+ consistently eats clean for a year they can halve their weight damn near

I feel where you coming from, I was 340 and down to 200, it took about two years and I'm still trying to get down another 30

For suggestions,

Cut out pop for water or if you want something sweet, get the lil flavor bottles and use that with your water.

Cardio is a big thing, depending on your job, try to 10,000 steps a day in or if you got access to one, a stationary bike is a great way to get cardio in.

Diet wise, cut out fast food and try to keep things to the basics, I keep it to meat, veggies, and brown rice. Cut out the candy and try to find a substitute, fruit and trail mix is a good substitute to use.

Honestly, the main factor is time and realizing that you're in for the long haul and the lifestyle change.

How much you lose so far?

Working 9 to 5 is an excuse. I wake up at 5am and walk/jog 3 miles. After work I hit the gym.

If anything try the OMAD diet. One meal a day. Eat 2 apples in the morning and down 32 ounces of water, don't eat until 4pm.
