Mike the Executioner
What went on up there? Poppers and weird sex!
I keep thinking about the last time Cena competed at Backlash, which was 2009. You know what happened on that show?
-Cena faced Edge for the WHC in a Last Man Standing match, which ended up being their last match together. I remember being like
whenever they showed Big Show chokeslamming Cena through the searchlight. They made that match feel like the biggest main event in the history of WWE.
-The six-man tag between Legacy and Triple H/Shane/Batista. Orton won the WWE Championship after kicking Triple H in the skull and they actually wrote Triple H out for almost two months.
-Christian won the ECW Championship, his first world title. They put together an entire tournament between WrestleMania and Backlash to determine who would face Jack Swagger for the title.
-Jeff and Matt Hardy had an "I Quit" match. It had that moment where Jeff tied Matt to the table and was about to leg drop him through the table off a ladder, but Matt quit. Jeff hit the leg drop anyway.
-Ricky Steamboat faced Chris Jericho after showing out at WrestleMania. His first one-on-one match in WWE in about 15 years.
Looking back, that show was packed. They had three weeks to book it and it felt way more intense and impactful than this Backlash does. You didn't have a whole bunch of stars sitting out back then. You were going to be on the show no matter what. The biggest storyline coming out of WrestleMania isn't represented at all this year. The World Heavyweight Championship has only been defended once on PPV this year. Both women's world champions are sitting out. You only have two matches that feel like they matter and that's because they were built up the way they would get built up back in the day.
If you're going to put together a PPV in three weeks, you have to be efficient with your time and get all the hot storylines in there with no hesitation. I guess they're going to wait until Money in the Bank to book a hot PPV, but maybe they should just schedule less of them from now on because they can't do it like they used to.
