I can't really blame the fans. I think it has to do with the business deciding that fantasy floss rap was gonna be the standard. People are sheep. They'll go along with whatever the label says.

exactly
Yeah, the label will push the rappers, but what I'm saying is, it was the fans who dictated what was rapped about, and ultimately what type of rapper would get signed. Over time it became the norm, and the labels just became masters of promoting it. You have to remember all of this took at least 10 years, it wasn't an overnight thing.

After that Bling Bling video it was a wrap. Blame Cash Money for that.
Nah, they just put it in your face, and went extreme with it, but it started with the tupac/deathrow era, and puff took it even further.

If it wasn't for the black power movement in the early 90's, you could say it started with the late 80's rappers like Slick Rick,Big Daddy kane, Rakim, etc.

fans don't dictate shyt, breh. in any genre or artform. They will simply buy whatever is popular.

You're acting like they came together on the streets, holding signs saying "we want hyper materialism in our hip hop."

nah. Artists study what's cool or could be cool. Some fail, some succeed. One flossing artist starts succeeding wildly, other artists will copy and next thing you know, it's a trend and people are programmed to expect it.

I disagree, go through every 2Pac single and listen to see how often he uses the word "Money". He didn't rap about that shyt often and rarely did it on his singles. DPG didn't rap about it. Snoop didn't rap about it much either.

You are not getting it, you are thinking too much.

Again, it was the fans who dictated what the artist would rap about, because those artists needed to eat. Like I posted, it took time for all of this to happen. You are looking at things from a point of view where rap is big, it wasn't like this back then, so labels didn't have all this power you think they had. You can believe me or not, but I'm not going to argue about something I seen firsthand. This isn't a theory I'm giving, I experienced it. I guess Jay-Z was just making shyt it up in the movie.

I didn't say that is all he rapped about, I said it started with him, and the deathrow era, meaning when he went to deathrow. The tupac before deathrow, and after, were different people.

He was driving around in rolls royces, wearing versace, having the big gold chain. That helped fuel puff to go even more extreme, and puff helped Cash money go even more extreme. The story just keeps going.

to be fair, i'll take any rapper being open about wanting to get money through rap and shoving it in my face than any of these i just need a beat and a place to rest my wary hip-hop laden head type of fakkits.
I'm glad you admit it, because this is why things changed!

I like both, I can't listen to fantasy rap all day, and I can't listen to "shyt is fukked up" rap all day. I need balance.

This is career suicide. But I also thought Ross being exposed as a former C.O would be the end of his chapter.

Ross admitted he was a C.O. as a way to provide for his family so he got a pass for it. let's not act like C.O.'s are not putting in work, they can be doing the same shyt that these so called "drug dealers" and "gangstas" rap about. it's just funny how a dude like Rick Ross put 50 out of his misery, shyt got me thinking like :jbhmm:

Ross denied that shyt until 50 provided the pics. Ross even had Vlad assaulted for asking him about his C.O past. He denied that shyt because he was ashamed of it and thought the fans wouldn't accept his fake raps after they found out his was a C.O. What he didn't know is that this generation doesn't give a fukk about authenticity.
