But republicans all say economy booming, stock market great this year jobs booming everyone has bigger paychecks how could this be..tax breaks to large companies trickle down effects to workers and bigger bonuses
Exactly!!! And poor imbeciles still vote for them in hope that their wealth will trickle down.

Dang, when my savings dips below $5k, I feel "broke." Not including 401k and other stuff.

How many of that 58% makes enough money to actually save? Some people simply don't have room to save even when they live frugally. Others spend more and more money as their salary goes up. Buying nicer cars and clothes is natural when your income goes up but it shouldn't be a $1 for $1 deal.

Contrary to popular belief, most people live check to check or damn close to it. This includes a significant portion of people who make 6 figures or close to it. Ask anyone who has experience in personal finance.
On a side note, more and more people leave money that would have gone into a savings account, into various investment accounts instead. This is part of the reason as well. People invest their money more than ever now which means less and less leave it sitting in savings accruing practically nothing.
