Imagine this, your poor, destitute Red China after 20 years of war. You decide to directly confront the most powerful military that’s ever existed (the American armed forces) that has nuclear weapons and used them five years earlier on your hated enemy, Japan, that it still occupies
:wtf:
Mao was insane

North Vietnam fought a ferocious & defiant war against a more advanced military at a tremendous cost. Had the govt. south Vietnam been supported by its people and not been so corrupt and contemptable, the outcome would have been different.

In 1995 Vietnam released its official estimate of the number of people killed during the Vietnam War: as many as 2,000,000 civilians on both sides and some 1,100,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong fighters. The U.S. military has estimated that between 200,000 and 250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers died. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., lists more than 58,300 names of members of the U.S. armed forces who were killed or went missing in action. Among other countries that fought for South Vietnam, South Korea had more than 4,000 dead, Thailand about 350, Australia more than 500, and New Zealand some three dozen

We backed the wrong side, now Vietnam is a valued ally and friend of US who have earned each others respect.

Ho Chi Minh told America that he just wanted a unified country. Instead, America supported French imperialism (similar to how America supports French imperialism today in West Africa) in South East Asia.

Maybe these kids are just too smart to fight pointless wars...add that most are getting degrees and some type of certs making them difficult to turn into robots :yeshrug:

I’m sorry but that’s really not how it works and most don’t see any types of action

And honestly a person with a degree in engineering and especially healthcare could quite possibly have a better career being in the military simply because the government pays for it and after your contract you’re pretty much guaranteed to pull any state or federal job

I know way too many successful black people
who’ve been in the military with GS 12 or higher jobs to say something like this

shyt I know some with GS 9 pay scale living very comfortably

I don't get this idea that you need to be super fit to be in the military. You really don't.

So long as you have a decent level of fitness and can shoot the hairs of a flying fly's arse from 100m, then that's all that should matter in the military.

A soldier that can't shoot is a shyt soldier. Simples.

Maybe in today's world. In the past, the lack of junk food and more physical activity was standard.
soldiers back then didn't have to carry anywhere close what's a normal combat load today

there's a lot of respect for that gen and its earned don't get me wrong - but you're not strapping plates, 100+ rounds, and all the other equipment that's normal on today's kits to the average guy in those days. they weren't bought in with those expectations and they weren't trained to carry that much weight either.

they're not asked to do the same things anymore.

Fear of the 'Red Threat', US position and opposition to North Vietnam was predicated on containing communism is Asia which seemed ascendant.

I was supposed to join the Navy fresh outta high school in 2016. I studied for the ASVAB and was in shape and all. I'm blind in my right eye though so they denied me. I got 3 cousins that all joined the military the same time in 2018, got out recently & are doing great right now

My brother is retiring after 20+ years in a particular branch as a senior officer now in his mid 40's, going to work for a private company somehow related to his specialty (intelligence). Going to be quite a life change for him.

Sounds like good news to me. We don’t need anymore young men fighting and dying over pointless wars meant terrorize the innocent and to fuel the rich man’s pockets. :yeshrug:

Some of these young men could get a nice MOS in the Air Force/Navy and never get close to action. Then come out with college paid for and VA Home Loans that don't require a down payment. It ain't all bad

Which is funny. If the US actually critically studied communism in Asia, it was really anti colonialist nationalist movements which espoused communism to mobilize the peasantry and offer incentives like land reform.

Only 3/10 people are qualified to sign up for the military for an age range of nearly 10 years.

That's crazy.

Many fifth generation fighter pilots have been very honest and said 7th generation fighter jets will probably all be piloted by A.I. so less humans there.

Metal Gear Solid may not have really been too far off. Machines legit fighting machines.

Did I say Viet Cong, cac? (I read Coliseum threads too haha)

North Vietnam defeated America. Just like how China defeated American attempts to conquer the Korean Peninsula in the 1950s, and they too were smaller than American GIs.

Americans never retreated faster than after China invaded North Korea in 1950
:damn:
the fact that the Chinese had the UN forces surrounded on mountainous terrain with the UN forces not having lines of communication and weren’t able to destroy the US 8th army and took 10:1 casualties was a big fail.

After the US retreated to the 38th parallel and the Chinese tried to attack further they got slaughtered

The Chinese are having their own troubles with recruiting soldiers.

No fizzy drinks: Chinese army tells recruits to shape up

The Chinese military has come up with some advice for would-be recruits on how to pass physical tests, sparking amusement among social media users.
In an online post, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) blamed overconsumption of fizzy drinks, excessive computer gaming and even masturbation for the poor health of young people.
It said physical test failure rates had reached an "alarming high", with at least half of the candidates failing in one city.
The military has been struggling to find recruits in recent years, despite its heavy promotion of patriotic "heroes" and military TV and film dramas.

Ten tips for recruits

The PLA's advice appeared on its official "ChinesePeoplesArmy" account on WeChat, a WhatsApp-like mobile messenger, on 19 August.
It cited data from a Chinese city where 56.9% of candidates failed their physicals, and recommended that potential candidates follow 10 basic principles:
  • Cut out fizzy drinks and alcohol: approximately 25% of all candidates failed blood and urine tests
  • Spend less time in front of screens: 46% of candidates failed eyesight tests, which the outlet blames on "reliance on mobile phones and other electronic devices"
  • Exercise more: 20% failed because they were overweight
  • Cut down on computer games and/or masturbating: 8% failed because of abnormalities in the scrotum as a result of sitting too much, it said
  • Develop better sleeping habits: 13% failed because their blood pressure was too high
  • Don't get a tattoo
  • Drink clean water: 7% failed because of ear, nose or throat problems, partly the result of long-term consumption of bad water
  • Seek corrective treatment for genetic conditions: 3% failed because of conditions such as excessive sweating or flat feet
  • Seek treatment for mental health issues: 1.6% failed because of mental health issues, particularly depression
  • Have better standards of hygiene and sanitation: 3.4% failed because of regional diseases, such as Kashin-Beck disease (KBD), a chronic disease affecting the bone found in western China that has been linked to poor living conditions

War is going to be fought by geeks pushing buttons. You won’t have to have many fit soldiers. Look what Ukraine is doing to Russia despite having less people. Whole army bases getting blown to pieces with hundreds killed by some nicca on a game boy
