What year and what area was this? There's why I can't live in some areas
When I got out of college I was making like 30k (maybe a little less) and had no trouble finding an apartment. And my credit was average.

She needs to touch base with reality then. Especially if she has kids. People commute to nyc from there. Englewood is light workYou need a family member/trusted person to be willing to do that.
She works in Englewood. Highly unlikely she wants to deal a commute to/from Middlesex or Somerset County.
Your credit score counts against you when trying to get an apartment, but paying your rent on time doesn't improve your credit score. But if you don't pay your rent it hurts your credit score.

Happened to a friend of mine in NYC, because of his credit places were asking for 6 months rent in advance for 1 year lease
Those people likely aren't single mothers of 2 either. An hour commute isn't light work. She needs to touch base with reality then. Especially if she has kids. People commute to nyc from there. Englewood is light work
agree about the single mother aspect. But family is still close enough, and a lot of these places in central/northern NJ have a great community. Secrets been out though and more and more nyers have been moving here. Those people likely aren't single mothers of 2 either. An hour commute isn't light work.
But she does need to touch base with reality and stay with her aunt. Her way out is earn a raise/higher earning job, and/or partner with a man.
Reasonable approach for sure.If the landlord is asking for 1st, last, security deposit, and 3 months rent, I think that is fair. Now only giving a 1 year lease sound like straight scumbaggery, but it should be expected, and what I would personally offer to the better places, along with an explanation of why my credit is bad.
That’s illegal now in NYC.
Good to know both.there's ways around this and I speak as a person who navigated the NYC housing market with bad credit in the past
