My mom and I had huge debates about how Hollywood portrays us by making up fictional characters.. mainly around the Harriet Tubman movie. Her usual response is that certain things didn't happen it Tubman's story but it did happen so it's okay to put in the movie
So I sent her this story as further proof and this is the response I get back:
"What's the story line? Is the character dressed as girl for safety to keep from being caught and stay alive or are they just using the gay narrative? To me that makes a difference. Even though it may be fictional I am sure there were instances a person disguised their appearance to keep alive!!!"

Love my mom, but we can't rely on black folks of a certain age to be the voice on these matters. Unfortunately those are the people who have the money and resources to tell our story's at moment. So we'll have to put up with such things. Until the next generation is in control of our narrative.
