I grew up in the 90s. I was 9/10 when one in a million dropped.

It really was Brandy, Monica and Aaliyah for the r&b teen girls. Mya came out later in 98, I loved all 4 of them. Aaliyah wasn't a one hit wonder, she had bops on her first 2 albums and soundtracks in between. She kept her face out there. Her sound was different from her peers at the time, helped to set her apart.

Yep.

Just to be objective so nikkas won’t think I’m some delusional Aaliyah stan, I would say Mary J was probably the most influential female artist from the 90s. I’d definitely put Aaliyah above Brandy and Monica.

Something like

Mary J
Mariah

Aaliyah was the queen in 1998?

:patrice:

I thought Whitney passed in 2012.

If Aaliyah was queen in 1998 then Moesha must have been "Super Queen."

And Aretha is still alive.

In 98 Brandy dropped never say never, that shyt sold 16 milllion worldwide and had like 3 #1 hits
:pachaha:

The boy is mine is bigger than any song Aaliyah has ever put out.

You can feel how you feel about Aaliyah but she is definitely a Queen of R&B and that’s a fact.

Thats your opinion...That aint no fact. Numbers dont lie. Thats why I brought up My Love Is Your Love.....That wasn't even Whitneys best selling album and it sold more then Aaliyahs best selling album.

As for how I feel about Aaliyah....any pics she ever had in magazines was automatic fap material. And I never once fapped to Whitney so everything I'm saying is from an objective perspective.

In the 90's Whitney was Queen and the numbers prove this. BodyGuard sndtrk was 42 Million worldwide.....Aaliyah never saw no 42 million. Stop it.

:deadrose: How you compare a pop artist to hip-hop/r&b?

If you want to be technical, the female artist that really ran the 90s would be a toss up between Mary J and Mariah. But they both have their own respective lanes. Mary is Queen of Hip Hop Soul. Mariah is Queen of Pop. Simple.

I won’t diminish what Whitney was by calling her Queen of this or Queen of that because she was so much more than that. That’s why “The Voice” suits her so much better. Whitney did it all and she did it all equally well. Whitney was r&b, Soul, New Jack Swing, Pop, gospel and Jazz. Calling her the Queen of R&B would NOT do her justice at all because she was so much more than that. “The Voice” is perfect for her and speaks to exactly what she was.

In terms of 90s r&b, Aaliyah was definitely a heavyweight and belongs in that same discussion when talking about ppl like Mary J, Mariah, Erykah, TLC and ‘em. Baby girl was a game changer AND Queen.

Check out that intro when they refer to her as “the sexy new Queen of R&B.”

Mariah is pop/R&B.........Madonna is the queen of pop. We arent even having realistic dialect anymore. I'm done.

You lost when you were talking about the 90s and didn’t include Mary J Blige or Mariah Carey in your initial argument. These two females - I can humor.

Whitney was a product of the 80s. If you’re talking r&b, you would have had a better argument with Mary, or somebody else. Hell, Toni Braxton would have even done justice. Brandy. Monica.

You had many options bruh lol

Everything I said was factual.

1. Whitney was bigger than one specific genre, so she doesn’t need to be in this discussion. She is bigger than ALL of these women. That is a fact.

2. Aaliyah put Timbaland and Missy on. Also fact.

3. In terms of r&b music in the 90s, Aaliyah was one of the more original and impactful. Also fact.

4. Hollywood was calling Aaliyah “the sexy new Queen of r&b.” Also fact.

5. “Are You That Somebody” was a game changer. Also fact.
