This is simple. There are way too many games available to watch. It waters down the need to watch the nationally televised games. That's the reason football will always be popular (and even they are getting greedy with these Thursday night games), because you basically have one day a week to watch that sport and one game on Monday.

Monday: NBA on TNT
Tuesday: nothing
Wednesday: NBA on ESPN
Thursday: NBA on TNT
Friday: NBA on ESPN
Saturday: NBA on ABC
Sunday: NBA on ABC
Who's watching all that and I love the NBA. But I have a life. That's way too much, of course your ratings are going to be down.

The game threads don't even do numbers and we have more than a passing interest in the games. Barring some complete fukkery, the finals is most likely going to be Cavs vs Warriors/Spurs. Not really any point in watching the games when you already know the outcome.
