See, everyone in NY knew Pete was killing Preem in that era. You're backwards. Petestrumentals, The Mary J remix, The KRS remix, The Militia remix he dropped after initially putting that beat behind Cappadonna on Future Flavas....Matter of fact all his Future Flavas exclusives had cats clamoring to catch dubs. Pete was making the best beats in hip hop from soul survivor up until he switched to the MPC around that Edo G album. Period.

I see you are either uninformed or just aren't next level at listening.

you must not have read what i typed

like i said, i like pete rock's style more so than dj premier style of production

but by the late 90's (we ain't talkin' bout the early 90's), pete was almost a shell of his former self

premier stayed up with the times and kept his shyt fresh, in 98' moment of truth dropped and that's arguably gang starrr's best album, dependin' on who you ask

that petestrumentals album was and is stale, bruh.

premier was runnin' laps around pete in the late 90's (nas is like, moment of truth, his production work with jay z)

naw, bruh. nope

Well. Yeah The Chronic is a better album, but is it fukked up that I'd rather listen to Soul Survivor? Pete's a top DOA producer for me, and Dre is too, but I really just prefer the rappers on Soul Survivor. I acknowledge that Chronic is a better album, but Soul Survivor might be my personal favorite "producer album" ever.

I don't think Pete was a shell of his former self in '98, but I do think that Preem was running shyt by then. Moment Of Truth is my favorite Gang Starr album though, and that late 90's and ear 00's era Preem is bulletproof to me.

How strange is my opinion?

I agree entirely minus the bolded

soul survivor was pete's last "hoorah" before fadin' into obscurity with some decent gems here and there over the last close to 20 some years

soul survivor won't/ain't some classic album. it's a decent album at best. i like quite a few songs off of it. i even favor pete's style of production (when it's still decent) over someone like dj premier who surpassed pete by the late 90's into the early 2000s (gang starr ownerz album was nice)

I agree with this, minus the bolded. Even though I like T.R.O.Y. and the Main Ingredient album better than Soul Survivor, the STYLE of beats that Pete was doing on Soul Survivor was my favorite style that he had.

Soul Survivor is arguably Pete Rock's prime production wise. You are really jumping out a window right now. He was the best producer in the world in that little late 90's to 2000 stretch.

Also, gangsta rap has a shelf life.

I bought Soul Survivor off the strength on line-up. It was underwhelming.

pete's best years were from 91' to 94' and then in the late 90's he came (pause) with some gems here and there but they were few and far in between and paled quite bit in comparison to his earlier work. by the late 90's, pete was no longer in his "prime production wise" :comeon:

pete still a legend and one of the greatest to ever do it though

I agree. The Game, Take Your Time, Strange Fruit (Trag & Sticky), Verbal Murder, The Two...a couple of months ago, I found myself loving Truly Yours '98. Half-Man/Half-Amazing wasn'tas good as I was expecting, neither was Tru Master.

And for the record, Petestrumentals puts me to sleep every time. I wasn't a fan of the BBE collections; not Dilla, not Pete Rock, not Marly...Jazzy Jeff's was okay though

naw, it's not fukked up if you rather listen to soul survivor. not at all

pete's a top 5 hip hop producer. i agree

that's fine if soul survivor is your personal favorite "producer album" ever. like you said, it's your "personal favorite"

pete by 98' just wasn't the same as pete in 91' to 95'. those years were prime and peak era pete. when 98' rolled around, pete would still drop that occasional gem, like his "take your time" song but it won't like he was producin' just as many songs as great as that or main ingredient or mecca and the soul era

98', premier was gettin' his second wind in. came back with guru and dropped moment of truth, "nas is like" single, rakim etc

pete had the better beats on Rakim.

Pete being a shell in 98 is one of the silliest things I've read on here. Citing take your time as a highlight is also wild given the better material I provided from that album on my links.

Also, grap Luva did half man half amazing.

honestly, at the end of the day we all got opinions

but i can't see it; not when i compare 91' to 95' pete to 98' pete.

91' to 95' pete did the "shut em down" remix and "down with the king" for run dmc :mjcry:

yup

them petestrumentals were bland as fukk. seems like pete won't even tryin' or it was just like scraps off just random ideas he didn't quite complete

i actually liked dilla's bbe instrumental album more and dilla is a disciple of pete rock's. although dilla's bbe instrumental albums won't the be all and end all either

to sit here and act like pete in 98' was as great as pete from 91' to 95' is unbelievable

98' pete won't comin' with nothin' fukkin' with all souled, main ingredient and or mecca and the soul brother pete

was he still good in spots? yes but was he in his prime and at his best like years before? hell naw
