Its almost like he had everyone from NY on that album but Nas and Jay, would have been great to hear prime Jay over Pete Rock.

For as much praise as Jay gets (from people including me) about how great a job he did over the years working with great producers, and putting producers on in the game, there are a few pretty big producers that he never worked with at all, or at least not until super late in his career. I understand that you can't work with everyone, and Jay has worked with more than most, but I would've loved late 90's or early 00's Jay over Pete Rock, Madlib, Dilla, Alchemist, Nottz, RZA, No ID, etc. I know he worked with Pete and No ID later, but still. I also never understood the Nas/Pete beef, and why they never worked together since Illmatic. Seems like a lot of rappers have had beef with Pete now that I think about it.

And yeah, I gotta cosign with homie who said '91-'95 PR >>>>>>>> the later 90s PR. By far.

Again, not a knock on Pete, but the later stuff ain't fukkin' with Mecca or Main Ingredient, or the soundtrack joints, or the outside production he was doing when he was on fire- Run-DMC, Heavy, House of Pain, Public Enemy, Nas, AZ, Redman, Mary J, Das, ADOR... maaan, ain't no way.

If we're gonna talk about '91 up to '93, you're right. But after '94, Premier passed PR to the point it wasn't even funny. And on some lowkey shyt, let's not act like PR's late-90s work wasn't DIRECTLY influenced by Premier. :mjpls: People wouldn't prefer to bring this up, and I'm not callin' Pete a biter, but I heard Premier in a LOT of his stuff post-'97. That scratching numerous phrases on the hook, the weird change up every 8th bar, the chopped-up style... that doesn't sound like a progression of the early-mid-90s Pete Rock, that sounds like Pete Rock's version of what Premier was already doing circa-'97.

And it's all good! Because producers are influenced by each other, no matter what they say. Everybody (at least back then) listened to eachother's shyt and tried to outdo or match what was being done production-wise. It's what made the beats get so great in those years. But that Primo influence on Pete is more obvious than anyone ever tries to make it.

I don't think they sound at all similar. I do think they low key dueled for best in NY, though. Premier sounds cold, robotic, evil, sinister etc (i mean that in the best way possible), Pete has a warm, human, live swing feel to his drums (before he went robo drums post 9th wonder).

the scratching may have been ramped up post Premier but Pete always scratched.

Yeah, he always scratched... but different parts from 4-5 different records on the hook? That was that Premo shyt.

I didn't say they sound similar, I said he did his version of what Premier was doing at the time. Some of the late 90s tracks sound like a progression of his style, but a few of 'em... like "Tru Master", "Respect" with OC, joints like that... Pete meets Preem.

Tru Master i can see it. I can see it in Bumpy Knuckles Baby. Respect sounds more like some Showbiz meets Pete stuff to me.
