to sit here and act like pete in 98' was as great as pete from 91' to 95' is unbelievable

98' pete won't comin' with nothin' fukkin' with all souled, main ingredient and or mecca and the soul brother pete

was he still good in spots? yes but was he in his prime and at his best like years before? hell naw

Play Soul Survivor. It's as good as anything he's done ever in his career on some beat shyt.

matter of fact, listen to this off the "boring/bland" Petestrumentals: Listen all the way to the chorus. Pete was outstripping everyone on some funk and groove shyt in this era.

HOW CAN YOU FRONT ON THIS?????? listen to that groove. Premier was not seeing this level of dusty funk at the time.

The NATURE joint????? Listen to these drums/bassline. You guys are bordering on the ignore button at this point. I can't be bothered with such wacky opinions.

The Nature jawn was cool...I think Roc Marci was on one or two...it's been over a decade since I've listened, but those were cool. I remember liking those and that was it. I used to play them while on the bus ride to and from school, and I couldn't vibe with them.

@Big Mel i like soul survivor for a few songs but it other than those handful, i'm good. petestrumentals were ok at best but again, nothin' to write home about

petestrumentals just seemed like pete goin' through the motions and not really tryin' and doin' somethin' he could damn near do in his sleep

"ain't sayin' nothin' new" - the roots

i remember buyin' petestrumentals the day it came out and bein' hyped as hell for it only to be a bit disappointed

i respect your opinion but i don't agree

I have a version with Tragedy & Nore i believe. Common was the replacement.
Word? That's one of the hardest verses too. I'm glad Common ended up on there.

Another joint I didn't like on there at first but loved that shyt later was the MC Eight joint

The MC Eiht joint is a highlight to me. I didn't like 'Mind Blowin' ever. I can tolerate it now. I loved the title track more than most people it seems. That beat is gorgeous to me.

Great album didn't do as well as it could/should have at least from commercial stand point. Its almost like he had everyone from NY on that album but Nas and Jay, would have been great to hear prime Jay over Pete Rock. I think not having either of those two held the album back a little.

Does anyone remember The Professional by DJ Clue? that came out the same year and went plat I think. Ive not played that CD in years but I don't remember being anywhere near as good as Soul Survivour.

Well. Yeah The Chronic is a better album, but is it fukked up that I'd rather listen to Soul Survivor? Pete's a top DOA producer for me, and Dre is too, but I really just prefer the rappers on Soul Survivor. I acknowledge that Chronic is a better album, but Soul Survivor might be my personal favorite "producer album" ever.

I don't think Pete was a shell of his former self in '98, but I do think that Preem was running shyt by then. Moment Of Truth is my favorite Gang Starr album though, and that late 90's and ear 00's era Preem is bulletproof to me.
Chronic aged horribly..

Petestrumentals bland??????

Take The D Train?

Cake???

Nothin Lesser?

Back On The Block????

you guys have awful taste, man.
I honestly can't believe the blasphemous sh!t being said about PR in this thread.. :snoop:

Petestrumentals "bland", and Pete Rock being "a shell of his former self in '98".. :heh:

Preme wasn't fukking with pete rock from 91-01. Lets stop this non sense

If we're gonna talk about '91 up to '93, you're right. But after '94, Premier passed PR to the point it wasn't even funny. And on some lowkey shyt, let's not act like PR's late-90s work wasn't DIRECTLY influenced by Premier. :mjpls: People wouldn't prefer to bring this up, and I'm not callin' Pete a biter, but I heard Premier in a LOT of his stuff post-'97. That scratching numerous phrases on the hook, the weird change up every 8th bar, the chopped-up style... that doesn't sound like a progression of the early-mid-90s Pete Rock, that sounds like Pete Rock's version of what Premier was already doing circa-'97.

And it's all good! Because producers are influenced by each other, no matter what they say. Everybody (at least back then) listened to eachother's shyt and tried to outdo or match what was being done production-wise. It's what made the beats get so great in those years. But that Primo influence on Pete is more obvious than anyone ever tries to make it.
