Some examples that come to mind:

Pras - Ghetto Superstar -- The song "Ghetto Superstar" was being played on radio all the time, but that did not help Pras' album sell. I think it may be because the song was more associated with the Bulworth Soundtrack and was released several months before the album came out
i def never bothered to listen to pras solo albums...ghetto supastar only hit because dirty kicked some dope verses lol..i might give his debut a listen..see if im missing anything

The Beatnuts - A Musical Massacre -- "Watch Out Now" was on the radio CONSTANTLY in 1999. I will never understand why that never helped The Beatnuts blow up.

Add on more examples ...

Good thread

Pras was trash as a solo artist. That song only blew up because Ol Dirty went to the wrong studio and got on the song.
It might have been Mya's first appearance, and if it wasnt, she wasnt a hot enough star at the time to add much.

Pras was a guest on his own record.
Hip hop fans knew he was trash and stayed away from his solo album.
The pop fans who blew the Fugees up stayed away too.
Brehs, is it safe to assume that this isn't a thing anymore in the streaming era?

Q-Tip's Amplified is another borderline example. It went Gold, but I thought it would have at least gone platinum based on how much airplay "Vivrant Thing" and (to a lesser extent) "Breathe and Stop" got. "Vivrant Thing" seemed to get much more airplay than the singles from some Tribe albums that went platinum. To be fair though, "Vivrant Thing" came out several months before the album and was first on the Violator compilation.

And Imagine if he really did delete that shyt like he claimed he wanted to on that culture vulture Vlad Tv?
God must have heard that shyt and was like "Yeah, let me edit this nonsense real quick" and pushed ODB towards the studio.

It's really funny the way he portrayed ODB's involvement. On the one hand, ODB's supposedly too drunk/tired/clueless to even know where he is supposed to be. But if you listen to ODB's lyrics, they are far from nonsensical garbage. In fact, they actually have a lot to do with Bulworth the movie, which you can't say about Pras' lyrics :heh:

Releasing the song without getting all the clearances can bite people in the ass when the song blows up.

Speaking of which, based on this exact scenario, and the second single not getting any mixtape play. Gonna assume that the HUGE single "Uptown Baby" didnt help Lord Tariq and Peter Guns album sell units either.
Think I read somewhere back in day they had to give up all of the publishing for that one/didn't make anything off of it.
