AOC has passed some smaller pieces of legislation, including a bill addressing menstrual equity in federal buildings and certain appropriations amendments. She's also been successful with some resolutions and has co-sponsored bills that became law, though typically as a secondary sponsor rather than the primary author. Some of her work on veterans' issues and small amendments to larger spending bills have made it through the legislative process.I ask this with full seriousness but what exactly have they done besides make arguments that are part of the public record? Where the legislation? I’ll give them advocacy and limited influence on policy shaping but when we need to see something in black and white, and not this symbolic stuff, what did they sponsor that became law of the land?
The other Squad members have similarly modest records of major standalone legislation becoming law. Ayanna Pressley has worked on some criminal justice and health-related measures that have been incorporated into larger bills. Ilhan Omar has had some foreign policy-related amendments included in broader legislation. Rashida Tlaib has focused heavily on environmental justice and banking issues but with limited major legislative successes.
Their role has been shifting Overton Window and advocating for the voiceless.
AOC has a gray spot on Israel-Palestine. She didn't campaign on it. She was aloof about it. And has been scared to death to advocate like Rashida, Ilhan, and others have done openly.
If I saw AOC, I'd tell her to move like Andre Carson who was the 2nd Muslim elected to Congress. I have a good relationship with Andre and he is almost always on the right side of this issue since he came to Congress in 2008. Same as Keith Ellison.
