Showing that compared to other sports, the NFL is a universe unto its own, at the half-way point in the 2013 season, the National Football League is smashing the competition in the television ratings and overall viewership department.

Currently, NFL games account for the 18 most-watched programs on television since the NFL season kicked off on Sept. 5, as well as 19 of the top 20 (see the chart below). Through Week 9, NBC’s Sunday Night Football accounts for the seven most-watched primetime shows this fall.

In addition, the average NFL game telecast (including broadcast and cable) has drawn 16.8 million viewers (vs. 16.0 million at this point in 2012) – more than double the average primetime viewership (7.5 million) for the big four broadcast networks in the new television season, according to information provided by The Nielsen Company.

The question is, is football becoming so popular on television that fans would rather watch from the comfort of their home rather than pay to see games in-person at stadiums across the country? The NFL has seen attendance drop in five consecutive seasons, and has recently loosened up on the blackout policy in an effort to try and draw more fans to the stadium. Still, the problem the NFL faces is one that the other Big-4 sports would like to have. The NBA, NHL, and MLB would love to have these ratings numbers.

Other notables around NFL ratings:

An NFL game telecast has been television’s most-watched program in each of the season’s first nine weeks (tied with 2012 and up from seven of the first nine weeks in 2011).

I think they meant in the quality of play being "diminished" a bit due to the constant rules changing

....then I guess people are stupid, because if the quality of something was diminishing THAT greatly, I wouldn't waste my money/time on it, yunno? So either people are stupid, or this whole argument of "diminished play" is being overstated. Because the numbers don't bear that out.

I see alot of cats complaining about parity and such.....as I said in that other thread, I watched all seven hours of The RedZone and the Chiefs/Broncos game and was thoroughly entertained all day.

The only fans who think a sport is dying are (a) fringe fans, and (b) haters of that sport.

Plus, there's an ulterior undertone on THIS board, where idiots like to pit one sport against another (hence, the underlined red part).

you keep misunderstanding the points people make
the NFL as a commercial/entertainment product is thriving. fantasy and gambling have been huge boosts to footballs popularity
the NFL as a league of football as a sport has been toned down to some bullshyt

me in particular, I dont watch football for entertainment, and Ive watched football before it became an offensive farce.

if you're interested watching the mechanics of the game and seeing a fair competition, the bias towards qb, wrs and offense is disgusting. defenders get flagged all the time for even breathing on players.

if you're interested in getting entertained on your couch, the NFL is at an all-time high. especially since most 'entertain me' fans love high scoring and dont like defense.

The NFL is dying, it has hit it's peak and will only decline.
This is just like the Roman Empire, right before the Visigoths came and crushed the buildings.

I understand exactly the points people are making.

And generally speaking, one's points can only be based on either (a) individual interpretation, or (b) factually-based data.

SO....if people keep saying:

if you're interested watching the mechanics of the game and seeing a fair competition, the bias towards qb, wrs and offense is disgusting. defenders get flagged all the time for even breathing on players.

...then why isn't that being reflected in the number of people watching? Why aren't the numbers waning? Who knowingly financially supports en masse an inferior product (inferior, in accordance with your terms, meaning "bad mechanics, poor tackling, etc.)? Serious question.

This isn't a personal attack on you, but how does that argument make sense, otherwise? It doesn't. It ONLY makes sense if one wants to suggest that (as I said before in the other thread) the large and vast majority of NFL fans are FRINGE FANS, so therefore the appreciation for "mechanics, etc." isn't as pronounced as most would think. And even THAT argument is suspect, because how do you quantify it?

But see, nobody proffering this argument has even remotely suggested that yet. No, instead they just keep on with the platitudes, "it's dying, the games look bad, the games are boring", etc. So if that's their only foundation, to that I say...look at these numbers.

Further, and more specifically...let's not act like morons on this board don't try to downplay the NFL for anything NBA-related. That's more addressed to them, those who deliberately try to :troll: with that sensibility.

...here come THIS nikka. :stopitslime:

how do you want to quantify it ? majority of NFL 'fans' ARE casual, fringe, whatever fans. half of them would meet you with a blank stare if you talk about the B gap (unless they played madden :heh:)
all of those fans LOVE scoring
this isnt about the NFL even, in EVERY league in america people love scoring and think defense boring.
take the Spurs, for example. most people on this board will say theyre boring, shyt you have more europeans rooting for them in europe than americans outside of san antonio
NHL went ahead and artificially upped the scoring.

its the american mindset of entertaining with a flashy, exciting, entertainment scoring play

theres no way to quantify it though, really. but most people watch it for that. I dont want to sound elitist or whatever...but it is what it is

red zone is super popular, even on this board. and red zone is a quintessential representation of what the majority wants- see highlights of big OR scoring plays. no one besides a small group gives a shyt about a miracle converted third and 2 play by the TE. they barely even show RB runs for short TDs in highlights anymore, leaving more room for big pass plays.

instead of watching a real football game, tons of people watch red zone instead. if the majority was watching it for mechanics, red zone wouldnt be as popular. 10-7 games would be as popular as 42-35 games, and so on.

People don't seem to understand the dynamics of the National Football League. They're in the business of entertaining and generating revenue.

So yes, when your biggest money maker is on the offensive side, and scoring points similar to a basketball game is entertaining to more consumers, then the rules will cater to that side of the ball. Is it fair? Not really, and the real football heads (those who played, coach) don't like it, but its still football and we'll love it regardless.

nikkas really wanna return to the '40s though when it was a penalty to throw an incomplete pass, or the 80s where it was legal to shove a receiver all around the field up to 10 yards (and teams running the R&S/49ers were still putting up big numbers passing), and that's never gonna happen. So you can either stop crying and accept the direction football is going, or stop watching and stop supporting. It's that simple

I dont consider myself a casual fan but I agree that the game it self is set up to cater to offense and they are doing too much to protect guys like Tom brady because they are the stars. I can also say its few and far inbetween when a great team wins the superbowl. its more the team that survives or gets hot at the right time.. But at the same time I love the redzone channel, I love 43-45 games and I mostly only want to see the big plays from games that dont involve my team... so no the rating dont equate a quality product, shyt look at all the shows on tv that are number one in ratings, most are terrible, doesnt mean they are not entertaining.

....but this presuppositions that there aren't alot - ALOT - of informed NFL fans who are older than 30, those who've been watching the league since way back in the 70s, who DO understand about mechanics and the recent pussification of the game, but who still enjoy it as much as I did yesterday. It's wholly dismissive of that whole demographic and, again, such a sensibility lacks factual data to support itself.

So how is there quanification THERE?

Look, we could do this all day, so let's just agree to disagree on this, brotha.
