You are falling for this hook line and sinker. I work in tech out here in SF/Silicon Valley and a lot of companies have low economic and social “outreach” programs or donate to them, many have “a focus on diversity and inclusion” and at the end of the day....you’ve seen the headlines about what’s really going on out here as far as underrepresented groups and locals being employed by these companies.
Even as a person with degrees from Stanford and Wharton, I’ve been used as a pawn in their “pipeline” fraud as “interviewing” me allows them to tick off the female and black box on their reports. At the end of the day, all those bullet points mean naught when it comes to the reality of who actually gets in to Amazon, especially at the corporate level, I’ve interviewed with them and know the people and culture they have within those walls...it’s not welcoming.
NYC has had programs like this for awhile and I know companies can abuse them and use them as a shield for their hiring practices. The language doesn't have to be there at all. Companies are already ignoring the EEOC at the end of the day anyway? The local colleges here have put an effort into turning out people for these types of jobs and kids actually getting jobs/careers out of college or before they graduate. I wish programs like that were around when I was graduating during the recession. Maybe they'll find 25k white men from out of state to fill low tier 125-150k a yr jobs but that seems highly doubtful. Will their middle management and executives be a bunch of white men with just enough diversity to avoid the hard questions well that seems to be their mo.
How will we combat the worst forms of human nature and racism in our environment? Until we can figure that out should there be any job creation? I'm sure a lot of us have friends and family who work in tech should we see them as the exception?
I think the location is excellent and in the longterm will be great for the city/state/citizens.
