The people that won the election for him (Rust Belt cacs) are the most wishy washy voters in the country. They switch up with each election depending on what happened the previous 4 years. Dubya wouldn't have gotten a second term if not for war. And his daddy barely beat Dukakis even after riding the coat tails of Reagan and he only lasted 4 years. Jimmy Carter only last 4 years cuz he made promises and couldn't deliver. These people vote with their hearts and not their brains

It wasn't that "most voters" were turned off by the Dems, it's that there's a white nationalist/alt right movement among working class white people that, along with somewhat lower turnout for minorities, put Trump in office.
