The grandmother was never the Alpha from the start, the male who stepped in and stopped the pit from doing further damage was. This is also disturbing because the kids who were there could have been seriously hurt because they wouldn't have been considered Alpha dominant either especially based on your depiction of being close to the "dogs level".
