I completely disagree. You need that star player to bring the eyes to it in the first place and then while watching that star you hope that they enjoy the product and stick around. From there people eventually develop allegiances to teams. We've seen in the 25 years of the WNBA that nobody is watching so they need as many eyes as possible on it.

I know a couple women that have never thought about watching a WNBA game that has made Caitlyn appointment TV.

Normally yes it's dangerous, but what better option does the WNBA have considering trying to build interest organically clearly hasn't worked? Plus this is a new phenomenon for most of us sports fans watching a league build from infancy. We weren't around to watch NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL or any of those try and build a fan base from nothing so we really have no clue on the best way for a newish league to establish itself and build a fan base. IMO the first step is just doing whatever to get people watching. If that means riding the momentum of one player who's caught the nation's attention then ride that wave.
